Why does everyone take this so personally? The first part of my post stated that retaining McMahon would not be my choice if I were in charge. I simply laid out a case of why I wouldn't be surprised if a change wasn't made at the end of the season. It seemed to be an opinion shared by many of the big check writers at the Baseball First Pitch Banquet a few weeks ago. I have no inside information what the final decision will be, but again, it wouldn't surprise me if McMahon is given another year.

It sounds more like you are taking it personal. It's not meant to be. It's simply pointing out that the mindset that LSU has to get a "top tier" HC, which I take to mean is an accomplished HC current at another major conference program, in order to be successful is flawed when it comes to basketball. And I think that misperception comes from that line of thinking in football and, maybe to a lesser extent, baseball. In both instances LSU is a market leader in those sports. That's not the case in basketball. But it's also not the case for just about every school in the SEC not named Kentucky. Power conf. poaching isn't as routine in basketball. So LSU hiring a HC from a mid-major program would not, on its face, be a "failure". It would be the norm.

MM is the lowest paid HC in the SEC (by average annual salary). His buyout would be 80% of his remaining contract. That would come out to around $6M..paid in installments over the next 3 years. That averages out to appx. $2M per year. Relatively speaking, that's not an exorbitant buyout. Given the level of total apathy surrounding the program it doesn't make much sense to delay the inevitable to "save" what would amount to around $2M if LSU kept McMahon on for another year. When you consider inflation of the coaching market, you're probably "saving" even less than $2M because a new coach hire next year would likely be a bit more expensive than a hire this year.

While perhaps not their first choice, LSU could hire a coach similarly situated to McMillan at A&M. His average annual pay is $3M. While that would be low for the SEC, it wouldn't be all that low relative to other major conferences. Most notably the ACC who has a school currently paying a coach who will not be named LESS than $3M annually. And $3M would be a "minimum wage" hire in the SEC. Even just paying $4M would open up a bigger market. It simply makes little sense to keep McMahon.

The analysis is pretty simple. You fire McMahon at the end of this season and get someone else to try to get a better ROI. Or you retain a guy for another year who has proven over the course of what will be (then) 4 years he can't win at a high level in the SEC to watch a program sink further into apathy (if that is even possible)...all to save a whopping $1.8M.

Yea they absolutely have to pick up the wins vs MSU/SC/OM/Ok that will get you to 5.

Win two out of Tamu/UGA/Ark at home gets you to 7.

Then win one of atTenn/atTexas/atAuburn/Bama gets you to 8 and probably in.

If i had to put odds I would say 18% chance of that happening. But you win 3 of your next 4 you can start to build up hope.

This is such an oft-repeated, stupid statement. LSU is a "whatever is winning school"...just like every other school in the country. Is Indiana a "football" school now? I bet they will be if they keep winning. Was Alabama a "basketball" school before Oats? They are now. No one gave a damn about LSU baseball...until Bertman started getting to the CWS and winning championships. Same for gymnastics. Now the arena is packed. Was LSU NOT a "basketball school" when 66k were showing up for games in the Superdome?

LSU has to find the right HC. McMahon isn't it. But that doesn't mean the program can't be great with the right guy. Nor does it mean you just give up on trying to be great (particularly with your second biggest revenue generating sport).

Every year around this time you get "baseball guy" who pops in to tell everyone how "he doesn't care about basketball and all of the money should be given to baseball." I know this might come as a surprise, but LSU CAN be great in both basketball and baseball if, for no other reasons, very few schools around the country care enough to be better than LSU in baseball. It doesn't have to be some either/or proposition

The McComeback Plan

Phase 1 - Go 3-0 vs. State, SC, & UGA

This sets up the best home game crowd of the season vs. a ranked Arky team.

Phase 2 - Win 1 game out of the Arky, Tenn, Texas, Bama stretch.

Texas is the most winnable game, but it's hard to win on the road in the SEC, esp. for LSU under CMM.

Phase 3 - Beat Ole Piss and OK

This gets LSU to 7 conf wins.

Phase 4 - Split Auburn and A&M to finish the season

That gets LSU to 8 conference wins and into the tournament.

It's quite interesting that we have a total of one SEC win and were down 50-25 at halftime in the PMAC against USCe and people are expecting wins the next 3 games.

That game was an extreme outlier, esp. the 1st half, still no excuse for LSU to lose. Advanced analytics point to State and SC being wins. UGA would probably be a 2-point favorite against LSU right now, and that could be a toss-up or slight LSU fav by the time the game rolls around.

LSU is still very much on the Bubble with NET 46, KenPom 42, and EM 44. LSU should win its next 2 games vs. State and @SC. Then, UGA is a very winnable game at home. The SEC is a mess right now with 12 teams having at least 3 Ls. Go 3-0 in that stretch, and LSU is back in the mix.

Love your passion man but…I can only hope for the team but coach is gone no matter what.

I can't believe these Tigers would pull a stunt like that again vs S. Carolina. In three of the last four games LSU has been leading at the half, and against Kentucky by a big margin.

McCantWin has no games classified as “WINNABLE” that word and McLoser should not be used in an English speaking sentence.

he took 19 shots in the last game....if he's taking that many shots a game we may not win another game this season.
