I have information on the team in one of my 3 boxes on the LSU team of 1908. I have the starting lineups for all the games including the army team. The team information is found in the New Orleans papers (there is like 5 newspapers in NO at the time). I have copies of all the articles on the 1908 LSU team.

I'm a Buckeye, and I wouldn't argue against a 1908 Natty for LSU. The NCAA and the National Championship Foundation both sanction it. Slam dunk, IMO.

Buckeye Jeaux many speak of the 1908 season and picking the best teams from that time with no knowledge of the teams and who is playing for each team.

I have seen sport writers picking Penn, Harvard or Chicago and others from 1908 as better than the LSU, having no knowledge that the LSU team core is made up of 5 Pennsylvania players and 2 Michigan players and schedule over LSU's weak schedule.

LSU tried to play many other teams in 1908 including Tulane and Michigan. The problem was Michigan was warned not to play LSU, as Tulane's coach was from Michigan and the Vanderbilt coach also and seen the speed of the team. Michigan was going to play Tulane in New Orleans in a post season game in 1908, LSU asked to play them in New Orleans. Coach Joe Curtis told coach Yost it is better not to come south and play LSU.

Martin Lally and Doc Fenton were fast and beat Mathews of Brown an All American track and field easily in a foot race.

The Baylor coach played in the Tulane game for Baylor, Tulane agreed to let him play. The game was close and Tulane had the coach kicked from the game and made a big deal of it in the paper. Coach Mills said LSU was much better than Tulane.

That sounds so very "Tulane-like". A century later and they are still sniveling whiny assholes.

Anyhow, this thread is awesome! If you want to post any pics or articles from your collection, I can guarantee they will be viewed a ton and will be appreciated. This stuff fascinates the hell out of me.

Right. NONE of us know the facts about that season.
The NCAA and the National Championship Foundation are well recognized as authorities on the subject, so I easily accept their conclusion that LSU was a co-champion of the 1908 season.

My father died in 1976. He LSU favorite chant was, "'08, '58 and next year!" I thought of that as the seconds ticked off on that last punt by Donnie Jones v. Oklahoma to seal the victory for the 2003 NC.

There's a stat that will never be broken! Offense gives up more points than the defense. Crazy! Awesome season as well even if it was 1908. Geaux Tigers! Awesome subject line and post! +1

Triple pass play in this game by LSU and the score does not show how much better the LSU team really is by this point in the season.

Jerry Sullivan was working wonders will the pasding game creativity back then.

I believe there are 2 other potential NCs that are unclaimed as well. Maybe in the 30s or 40s?

I remember looking at it and reviewing those seasons. One of the two LSU could definitely claim, the other one is iffy but if Alabama's going to claim anything remotely smelling like a national championship, LSU should do it as well. It's good for recruiting and the image of the brand.

So basically LSU should be claiming 4-6 national championships. They only claim 3.

Bottom line is, LSU just doesn't like being a winner. That's the only reasonable explanation I can come up with. From an overly zealous athletic compliance department, to unclaimed national championships, to running antiquated offenses. LSU, like the State that it resides in, is allergic to success despite all its potential.

I love my home state and its flagship university so this shite gives me a serious case of the sads.

Might as well. We let them take everything else from LSU and the State of Louisiana.

Nick Saban, Avery Johnson, all kinds of recruiters, trainers and coaches, half the in-state recruits, 1/3rd of our in-state fan base, Etc.

And another question...

Why did LSU play the TAMU twice in the same season that year?

Even Troy Middleton mentions the 1908 team in his biography as one of the factors why he decided to take the assignment as Commandant of Cadets...

This is interesting, though I don't know how much sway the National Football Foundation holds

LSU really should claim this title, and I'm not sure why they don't.

Would this make LSU the only program with 4 football national championships all coached by different men?
