It tells you just how big of a deal it is that Woodward poached the head coach at ND.

Certain aspects of the media reaction are frustrating. First, some pundits are simply ignoring Kelly's uninterrupted history of success everywhere he has coached. Second, I feel as if LSU is being punished for hiring someone who isn't sufficiently trendy or hip, as if being a fashionable hire were more important than being a capable, intelligent hire. Third, the media appears to be perpetuating the stereotype of LSU that they created over the last eighteen years: a very talented program led by eccentric caricatures and supported by rollicking drunks which occasionally blunders its way to an NC on a wave of bourbon and recruiting. Not a serious program like Alabama or UGA or OSU. Now they are trying to shoehorn a demanding, intelligent coach into that narrative by portraying him as deceitful and laughable. Finally, I think Kelly stands for many principles that are viewed as antiquated and out of favor: discipline, commitment to excellence, diligence, dedication, teamwork, seriousness, and so on.

I always want LSU to win, but I am particularly passionate in my hope that Kelly proves the doubters wrong in resounding fashion.

If Kelly is the guy Woodward wants, he gets hired ASAP. Can’t risk a changing of mind. Not to mention the early signing period.

If anything, it will help his street cred.

You can’t compare his departure to Riley.

Riley’s team was eliminated from
national title contention, Kelly’s was not.

And I bet you were one of the main ones complaining about why Woodward hasn’t announced anything yet, worried that he is desperate.

And now he has acted too fast.

In other words Woodward wasn’t going to do the right thing either way right?

They were sucking off the Freeman hire at ND for head coach as well. Said Freedom will take the program to the next level

There won’t be a mention of this from them when Freeman bombs

He left a team that still had a shot at a championship.

That’s a difference that is giving people an excuse to hate on him. It was a blunder on Woodward’s part to hire him before the playoff selection show.

There was no way or reason to wait.

You think it would have been better (or even possible) to hire Kelly after ND was invited to the CFP?

The timing was just fine. Kelly wanted to face his players and let them know, and somebody let the cat out of the bag a little too early. Life is hard.

frick anybody who doesn’t like it and frick Notre Dame.

Obviously Coach Kelly had some problems with ND and all their BS so he left FOR A BETTER JOB.

They can’t stand it that National Sportscasters and Commentators like Stephen A, Paul Finebaum, and
Rick Neuheisel all said LSU is a better job and they understood why Brian Kelly took the LSU job.

Let ‘em bitch.

It is pathetic. Their use of language and op-ed as "NEWS" is embarrassing. "Spurned" are you kidding me? You're a writer and you use "spurned" in your headline and the editor clears it. WTH? Yeah a coach reaches out to hire you and you reply back with disdain and contempt. Bravo Sierra!

None of that has anything to do with whether it was right for Kelly to leave the team when he did.

I am happy with the Kelly hire, but the further we get from the relief and excitement of the announcement, the more clear it becomes that the timing opened LSU and Kelly up to a lot of negativity at a time when we didn’t need negativity.

Are you more worried about winning and building a program or having a negative perception from the media? LOL

What does that even mean?

You mean the timing of hiring a coach when all other schools with openings were hiring coaches?

There’s all kinds of stuff we could worry about. It may not have a negative impact on building the program, but it’s assuming a lot to think that it won’t be used against us in recruiting.

Kelly had a choice... sit and hope to make the playoffs and possibly turn down approx $4M per year raise OR leave.

Napier left ULL and not coaching the bowl game.... so what's the difference?
