This theory will be tested if we win the first two. In 09 he bought Ranaudo back on short rest to give him the best chance of reaching the finals, when trying to get by with Ross may have given him the best chance of winning it.

I think Poche on Sunday has more to do with the matchup than thinking ahead.

That's what im hoping.

because nothing is guaranteed. Vandy might not even win. Im assuming they just think Poche vs TCU's lefties gives us a better chance to win. There might be a part of them looking ahead, maybe 10-20% of the decision.

I think that's more of a freshman not used to a college workload than one being more of a power pitcher than the other.

What he said was accurate. Lange pitches off his fastball. His success is predicated on being effective with it. If he loses a couple of MPH on it it can be a big deal for him (as we saw in the middle of the season).

Poche could drop a couple of MPH and it not effect him at all. He is crafty and even when he beats you with a fastball its usually not because he blew it by you. It's because he set you up and located it well.

Hope it works out. Would suck to burn our pen or a potential starter down the line(Bain) in Gm1.

No more so than burning it in game 2. Very little, if any, difference between going 1-1 with a game 1 loss vs a game 2 loss. So, logically you should try and give yourself the best chance of winning both vs. giving some of that away just so you win game 1.

Agree, I'm sure they've already discussed a bunch of scenarios and contingencies, but it seems like he is usually focused on winning one at a time in Omaha.

I thought he may use Lange for the chance to use him 3 times, but not surprised he went Poche. Probably feels like its a better matchup and he is likely to come back better on short rest.

Put me in the camp that hates this move.

LSU is screwed if we lose game 1. Pitching Lange in an elimination game is the last thing we should want.

So Lange is a guaranteed win for game 1? No, he's not. CPM is rolling the dice and is giving LSU it's best chance to win the CWS.

If it all works out:

Game 1: Poche
Game 2: Lange
Game 3: Wholestaff

Finals game 1: Lange
Finals game 2: Poche
If necessary: Wholestaff

Worked out swell for Tony Robichaux. I don't think he thinks he is rolling the dice either or playing for anything more than Sunday.. I think its PM playing the damn matchup in his head. Lange is the better pitcher that's not a question. You pitch your best pitcher in game 1 its not a game you play looking at their roster and go with the PM gut feeling of the day.

I know Lange has a higher ceiling and is more of a major league prospect but it isn't like he's a huge jump from Poche as it stands now. Poche was just as dominant in the regional and super regional as Lange and gives us in my opinion as good of a chance as Lange.

Lange won't start more than twice in the CWS. I feel pretty sure of that.

Especially now that he's not starting until Tuesday. The next time we see Lange after that would be (hopefully) in the championship series. We may try to squeeze 3 starts out of Poche though, and I think he'd handle it better than Lange would.

It would suck to do that in any game.

I don't think it would had mattered which of the two games he started. He still wasn't getting more than 2 starts

LSU is screwd if we lose game 2. We only have 2 set starters. So you put them in the order that gives you the best chance to win both. Lange gives us the best chance either day... but Poche gives us the better chance Sunday over Tuesday. That's what this comes down to.

He can't. The math simply doesn't work for the days rest he needs between starts. Starting Poche Sunday gives you the only chance to see Poche or Lange three times in the series if need be.

Best case they both pitch twice and both in the championship series. Worst case, Lange pitches twice (once in the championship series) and Poche pitches three times including the championship series. Plus, you throw the guy who threw game 1 just about all season and creates L on L matchups throughout their lineup (including their best power hitter).

Looks like I wasn't so dumb after all.

he's playing to win the whole damn thing. Poché is the better matchup against TCU. Let's hope it works.

EXACTLY.

Winning the first game means nothing if you don't win the second. Going 1-1 is the same, whether you win the first one or the second one.
