ott is irreplaceable at closer. i think it would be best to keep him there if possible with jones at setup if he stays. i know mainieri is trying to find another starter and its probably going to be tough, but if we want another championship run thats probably the best formula. ott should probably get a start in an early midweek game early in the season when he could potentially get a solid outing and pitch an inning of close during the weekend only if really needed. other than that keep him where he reigns
i would think dean could be a decent 1b but then again i have no idea. putting him in the field gives us an open dh spot, but i just dont find dean to be very strong on d. last year we had a tenacious outfield and that really helped us out. ill let the man getting paid figure that one out
cant wait for baseball season!
edit:
idn about dozar on 3rd either. i think mainieri was quoted to not be sure about 3b either

nah, he's replaceable if they need him as a starter

easier to find a closer than a 2nd starter
2nd starter also more important
2nd starter also more important

If it's so easy to find a closer and a 2nd starter is more important, why was Coleman the closer at the beginning of the year and only moved to the starting rotation once Ott had proved he could close games out?
Posted on 10/22/09 at 12:41 pm to LATIGERFAN
better question is why was Coleman moved to a starter if its not more important?
Posted on 10/22/09 at 12:45 pm to Lester Earl
Would he have been moved if there wasn't a Matty Ott on the team? Mainieri wants to keep Ott as the closer and that's where he will stay unless they don't have anyone they can rely on to win a game besides Ranaudo. I think they will have 4 people competing for the final two weekend spots....Mormann, Ross, Bradshaw and Mautulis. It's not inconcievable that freshman could step up too.

absolutely

if he doesnt move this year, he will next year. So its only a matter of time anyway.

so far, Mormann is an unknown commodity, it's tough to say how he will adjust to D1, LSU, the SEC, crowd sizes that he has never been in front of.
Ross and Bradshaw have each had flashes of brilliance, but both need to be more consistent. Bradshaw seemed to have the upper hand in consistency late in the year last year, but Ross had one of the best performances of any pitcher on the staff in his game against Ole Miss.
Matulis needs to have developed mentally to be considered for the weekend rotation.
So really, I don't think that the number of possibilities necessarily precludes Matty Ott from being moved to the rotation. Especially since he has already proven that he is our second best guy on the mound as Lester alluded to earlier.

Well, if none of those 4 guys can win consistently, that will be very dissapointing.
Posted on 10/22/09 at 1:11 pm to LATIGERFAN
it was basically the same predicament as last year, so dont be so suprised.
Posted on 10/22/09 at 1:24 pm to Lester Earl
Well damn, I would expect some improvement. I thought Bradshaw was pitching great at the end of the year and Mautulis was just a freshman, Ross has done it before and Mormann obviously has some ability to have been drafted in 17th and 20th rounds after his freshman and sophmore year. It would be a real dissapointment if not one of them can be relied on in a starting role on the weekend. All that being said, I have 100% confidence in Mainieri getting the right people in the right spots.

Mainieri agrees that Ott could become a starter and agrees its more important to have a good #2 as opposed to a closer.

Never for get about our coach pulling some really strange moves with the line-up. Many of which had little to do with talent or results. He changes the line-up like his underwear. Which has worked well.

I think Dean's fielding is more minimized at RF
I don't know if Dean has a strong enough arm to play RF effectively.

It would appear right now that Landry is going to play CF and Mahtook will play RF.

That would make more sense.

It will be tough for Jones to break into the outfield line-up. Dean is in for sure, Mahtook is going to be great, maybe if Landry struggles at the plate again, but I'm hoping he puts it all together this year. If Dean could play 1st, Jones would have a much better shot at playing some in the outfield.
