What about the teams who either don't make a bowl, or are in the playoff?
What do they do for this week?
What do they do for this week?

you want to play post-season football? make the playoff.
i want to WATCH postseason football.
i can’t believe how many of y’all are trying to take away games.
last night’s games were both entertaining games.
i’d much rather watch that than have to search through Hulu for something that doesn’t suck.

You gotta drop the word “bowl” that is for the game you get as a reward for your season. Which occurs at the end of the season.
The novel idea this dude and you are suggesting is to have teams schedule a competitive first game and have someone sponsor it. This is already happening just not every team participates because of the simple fact a win vs a cupcake is better in the cfp eyes than a loss to a good team.

Why does anything have to be changed except to satisfy the wishes of sanctimonious complainers who tell us how meaningless the bowl games are if not part of the playoffs and let us know its beneath them to watch the games? If you don't want to watch then don't watch, go cut your grass orgo hunting or whatever. Many of us enjoy that extra game at the end of the season against an intersectional opponent that is not ordinarily on the schedule. The games are often entertaining an d competitive regardless of the opt outs on either side. The last three LSU bowl games fit that description. The extra practice time allows for player development for the next season's team and helps in the evaluation of position targets in the portal. If you don't like the current system then go away.

Go back to the old bowl format of conference affiliation. Bigger bowls choose first. Start the playoff rankings at the by beginning of the season. G5 teams have to win a bowl game to be eligible for playoffs. P4 teams that win any of the 6 big bowl games go to the top of the playoff rankings. Any team that wins a bowl game and a conference championship automatically qualifies for the playoffs.
A school could turn down a bowl invite but they would be denying their team a chance at an automatic playoff spot.

Sounds like you're being the sanctimonious one with the "it was better back in my day" and "I DON'T LIKE CHANGE!!!!" old man bitching routine.
CFB has changed so much, but I think this would actually be a good change. You would get more people who care about the games, and the ratings would be better. It's basically the same thing but you just put it to kickoff the season.
You're still getting the extra game against an intersectional opponent. It's just to kickoff the season as opposed to playing at the end of it.
Maybe you can go cut the grass at that time because it'll still be growing in August!
I also find it laughable that everyone gets their panties in a wad over "BUT THE PLAYERS GET 2 WEEKS OF EXTRA PRACTICE!!!!" I don't need 10 extra practices to know that the majority of the team sucked this year outside of a handful of players. These players don't just magically become significantly better during that time.

We are creating a "bowl matchup" kickoff classic for every P4 team to start the season. Thats creating more quality football to watch.

Neuheisel and Stanford Steve are both FOS.

I would much rather this. We are starving for football in August. No one gives a shite about UAB vs Western Kentucky in December

My interpretation: you have to forget about bowl games as they currently exist; a post season reward. Think about them as games similar to the kickoff classics probably set up by the conferences. So LSU plays Michigan in the citrus bowl week 0; does all of the bowl bs before the game and plays a meaningful game that people are interested in. The CFP committee will have to do a good job of taking those games into account (they probably won’t). The bowls affiliated with the CFP would not be impacted and I don’t really care about the central Michigan/ western Kentucky bowls. I’m not necessarily for it and don’t think it will happen and there would be a ton of details to work out but it is an interesting thought. Plus it will be hot AF in outdoor games. Just trying to clarify for those thinking the games have anything to do with prior season….

This is a great idea and fans would be excited. You have a chance to start off the season at 1-0. Suddenly, the Independence Bowl is a big game.

Yeah, getting more and more like NFL. Pre-season.games that don’t count on record. And this “waiver” nonsense mentioned lately to extend player “eligibility “ that along with NIL and runaway transfer portal nonsense. No longer college football.

Makes sense
A lot of what we're seeing right now doesn't make sense.
I don't hate this idea. Treat it like a NFL pre-season game.

Soooooo it would be an entirely new team just as the other poster said. Seniors and draft eligible juniors aren’t gonna return to play another year.
