He seems like a younger Paul with no connections to this part of the country at all.
Except Paul played baseball at LSU for a year...then played two years at UNO...and his wife if from Louisiana. Otherwise, no real connections to this part of the country

We could only hope the new hire repeats Paul’s success from 08-17

We need a young coach with some swagger and turn this baby around. The program has just gotten stale with Paul the past few years. I’m really hoping it’s Vitello. I just feel like he’s a splash hire.

The problem with McDonnell is that no sane person would ever leave UL with the contract he has. It’s a monster:
- It started in 2019 at $1.15 million a season;
- any year he just MAKES a super regional it goes up $100,000 a year. There are retention bonuses in there also.
- he can extend that deal by a year at the end of each season. Which he will obviously do every year.
- so he starts every season with a 7 year contract where the buyout is he’s fired could approach $8 million.
The article about it literally sports the headline “Set For Life.”
LSU probably couldn’t get him to walk away from that sweetheart deal unless they gave him a perpetual 7 year, $14 million contract that essentially made him un-fireable.
And there is nothing that an LSU fan will tolerate less than a coach they can’t fire:

If people were paying attention they would see that johnson always came up with people that had info without being a big name

In the end, none of us are in the interviews so we don't really know what he sees or doesn't see from one candidate to the other.

You guessed prior to him being interviewed.
The best we can do is a TD koozie for your accurate guess.

Per the article you linked he gets a bonus of $50k if he makes a super regional. His base salary doesn't go up $100k just because he makes a super regional.
His salary (which was $1.15 million when he signed in 2019) goes up $50k each season. Which means his base salary will reach $1.5 million...in SEVEN YEARS.
LSU just gave their new Women's basketball coach a contract that will pay her ~$2.5 million per year...for the next eight years. And that is a sport with 20x LESS fan interest than baseball at LSU, and one that operates the largest in the red as opposed to baseball which (unless there is a ridiculous shutdown because of a panicdemic) generally earns a profit.
Point being LSU could EASILY offer him a base salary...today...for multiple years...that would pay him more YEARLY than the base he will have to coach for seven more years to earn.

I see where Johnson played college baseball at Shasta. I used to like their strawberry and grapefruit drinks
