I can think of one he used to have that may not be the most liked in his current position right now.

wat? Chad Holbrook, Tanner's top assistant, replaced him. He was fired after 5 seasons and has been the head coach at College of Charleston ever since. He was only 46 when USC fired him.
Mark Kingston replaced him and was just fired a week ago.

I wonder if he's doing this a favor to Tanner to make it look like he pursued a bunch of people and got turned down so he had to hire Monte Lee.

That lines up with what Kendall was saying on here the other day.

I meant to answer affirmatively that every coach since tanner retired had been run out on a rail (which I thought was three but apparently only two).
Poor wording on my part.

a 66 year old coach who was clearly burned out
He was in constant pain from disc replacement and spinal fusion surgery so much so that he couldn't hold his head up for more than a few minutes at a time.
Only total rest would allow the process to heal and he could never get that rest being a baseball coach. Whether he has healed or not, I don't know.
Chronic pain can drain the energy out of a person of any age.

I’d bet Maineri is coverage to let them go after Cliff Godwin at ECU.

I think it was both. Here is a quote he gave a year post retirement
quote:
I also felt that it was time to hand the program over to a younger person that had maybe a little more energy and that could do the little things that I always did. I was just running out of gas.
I've coached almost 2,300 games. I've coached over 900 games at LSU. With the expectations as high as they are at LSU, it could wear you down a little bit. I just felt it was the right time

Very possible.
Or it could be they are taking somewhat of a similar approach to what Arkansas just did with John Calipari in basketball. Cal was winning at UK. He just wasn't winning enough for their level of expectations. However, even at 65 (will be 66 during this upcoming season), Arkansas is thrilled to have someone with his resume. They know he is likely not a long-term hire. But it infuses some excitement into their program.
Same for Paul. He wasn't losing at LSU. But most LSU fans weren't heartbroken to see him go. If you are South Carolina he's a known name that will likely excite their fanbase and maybe he has a good season or two to get back to the CWS. They would be thrilled with that, whereas LSU fans had grown frustrated with Paul.

This doesn't make sense.

To be fair, unless he said this himself, you have no clue if this is true or not
This seems like one of those things the rant has repeated over and over and convinced themselves it was true. Strange phenomenon in my opinion, we see this happen all the time

If he’s fully recovered from the neck issue that bothered him his last few years here, it would be a great hire for them.

I always liked him. I hope he retires and stays around LSU

This is one of my most lasting memories of Coach Mainieri right after we were eliminated from our Super Regional by Florida State 5-4 in 12 innings in 2019.
He saw Antoine Duplantis sitting alone in the dugout holding back tears after his last game as a Tiger and Mainieri didn't want Antoine to be alone in that moment.

Why? Cliff is a former assistant…maybe they have the same agent, maybe not…but Paul’s name can be coverage to let Cliff work out the negotiating while everyone runs down the Maineri angle.
Totally makes sense.

It makes sense to hire Godwin. It doesn't make sense to need to smokescreen Mainieri to hire him
