This is a decent lsu team. Know your program and manage expectations. We arent gonna just become an elite blue blood all of a sudden.

We haven't played even one SEC game yet this season is already being tagged a failure. What up with that?

The Wade Brigade wants their ounce of flesh. With McNeese floundering they have to seize on every LSU loss, no matter how pathetic their arguments are.

I watched McMahon start 12-1 his first season and then go on to lose almost every single game after that (2-18 I think?). I will hold any judgement until SEC play starts

It's going to be bad, but he will get another pass from the McMen because Reed is out.

Just hold your horses. LSU plays Stetson, UNO and MVSU before hitting the conference grind. Those three teams have Kenpoms in the 300's and should be a welcome tiramisu for the MBB Tigers.

The basketball team is improved.
Much improved. But conference play is going to be a gauntlet. Still more likely than not to finish in the bottom fourth of the league imo.

Losing Reed for the season while also losing Ward right before the season I hate to say means this team is probably cooked. The SEC is absolutely BRUTAL this season, best in CBB by a long shot. We do not have the horsepower with those 2 out to navigate the SEC in any sort of winnable fashion.

I'm starting to see 6-12 or worse at this point. If it was the SEC of the past with a few bad teams here and there, maybe this team performs near .500, but this year's SEC? We just dont have the guys at this point. And this isnt a indictment on McMahon, just the reality of the situation right now with 2 effective starters gone for the season.

This is probably a better team than last season (though maybe not significantly), and McMahon did have a better performance in SEC play last year after a poor showing in the non-conf schedule. Thus, there is reason to hope he can repeat it. However, the SEC has been ridiculously good this year and almost every trend/data point is predicting LSU will be a bottom 1/3rd, maybe even bottom 1/4th team in the league as many of the same issues that plagued his first two LSU teams are there again. Being one of the worst of a really good group of teams isn't "success".

NO ONE is/was expecting LSU to become a "blue blood" all of a sudden. Particularly when they have really never been one in the history of the program. IF LSU finishes at the bottom of the league this year that will be the 2nd time in 3 years. There is no sport where fortunes can change as quickly as in college basketball. Sustaining success is a difference conversation. But if that happens it would be reasonable to question if the program is actually progressing towards anything of note. If so, what exactly is the peak of that potentially success? A tournament appearance once in every 4 years? Would that be the ultimate goal for the program?

Again, one loss to what looks to be a decent SMU team doesn't mean the season is over. But at some point there has to be some level of expectation.

Excuses abound. It's Wade's fault. McMahon doesn't have this or that. Players are leaving so there is no continuity. This player got hurt or that player isn't doing what he should be doing.

My early take: We seem to be a somewhat better team than last year. My best guess now is that we are a second or third round NIT team instead of a blowout home court first round loss. Less likely would be a NCAA bid or no post season tournament appearance at all, IMO.

I do think that it is taking too long for the relatively small amount of incremental improvement seen from the first to third year. In this age of transfer portal, the best coaches are able to adapt and thrive. McMahon likely will have this year and next year to prove it.

I have heard rumors that the powers that be are happy with the slow progress he is making.

Ward had been a one-trick pony for LSU (spot up three point shooter). I'd make the argument the combination of Bailey and V. Miller at that position is a net positive for the team. You don't have the three point shooting, but you gain much more in just about ever other aspect.

The loss of Reed hurts because McMahon's teams have routinely been abysmal in the half-court offense. Reed as a guy who you could run sets for. Now, LSU doesn't really have that guy (though they are better defensively with Collins/Chest inside), which makes the halfcourt offense seemingly worse. LSU was already falling in the offense efficiency stats with Reed in. That's continuing at a quicker pace now. But I don't think Reed's loss takes them team from 10-11 SEC wins to 5-6. He's probably worth about 2-3 wins because there is the tradeoff of improved defense.

I don't think Woodward wants to make a coaching change after this season. Particularly when he knows there is a LOT of demand for improvement in football. Also, there is not a lot of external pressure from donors/fans to make a change. Most are completely apathetic towards the program, and you have probably 40% - 50% of the fanbase who continues to be happy with McMahon despite no success. So unless LSU completely tanks to a 2-16, 3-15 SEC record, I don't think there will be much discussion from the people who matter about making a change after this season.

Missouri went 0-19 in the conference last season, but thanks to a stellar class coming, they're a serious player in the SEC this year. They upset KANSAS on the road

This fanbase is as bi-polar as it gets. Win and game and we’re awesome. Lose to a top 40 team at a “neutral site” and we’re terrible.

This team is not a top 10 team, but there is no reason to think we won't be contending for a NCAA tournament spot.

The SEC champion will probably have 6 or 7 losses this year and still be ranked in the top 5.

That and the best part of their 5-5 record are two losses. tMoralVictory Cowboys.

McNeese is 3-5 (two of the wins don't count b/c they were cupcake teams).
Their NET ranking is 98, while we are 8-2 and ranked 64.
Our best wins are KSU 102, UCF 90, and FSU 79.
Their 3 wins are Longwood 252 Illinois State 142 and North Texas 66.

So how are they ranked in the top 100 with a 3-5 record in a bottom tier conference?
Well their 5 losses are to 106, 10, 63, 78, and 24, and none of those losses were by double digits. The only two good teams we've played, we lost to both by double digits.
They've only played 1 Q4 team, while we've played 4. We've both played 2 Q1 games and 2 Q2 games.

If we had McNeese's schedule, our NET ranking would be higher.
Our SOS is sitting at 141 right now.
McNeese's SOS is 36.

We already have 4 Q4 games played, and our next 3 opponents are ranked 355, 335 and dead last 364.

McMahon did his team zero favors if we are a bubble team b/c of the horrible scheduling.
