He’s exactly the guy you want to slam the door.

Deven Sheeren might be that guy too.
Guidry might be your set up guy. He may go 3 or 3 innings.

There’s a lot to shake out.

In the right now there is no one with more frick you bravado than Guidry. He also has the talent to back that up attitude up. So right now he is the guy to come slam the door. Period.

I'm surprised more people arent talking him up as a potential starter. Yes his demeanor SCREAMS coming out the pen, but he has a VERY solid pitch mix and seems he could easily see the same guys 2-3 times through an order without worrying about picking out just 1 pitch to sit on.

I know a lot of us were skeptical going into last season them talking him as a starter role - it honestly makes a lot of sense seeing him so far this year. He could absolutely be a starter.

He may push for a weekend starter if he keeps it up

Lol

Yep no chance that happens. He has a grand total of zero starts in his career, and is perfect for the bullpen role he is in right now. Man what a weapon to have that you did not realize going in. At least not this good.

They stretched him out multiple times going into last year and did the same going into this year, they have every intention of seeing he can be a starter it seems at the coaching level.

Dont know why people are so dismissive of this being a potential thing that definitely could happen.

I'm not saying he couldnt be obviously a huge part of the pen, but the weekend rotation is very far from being set as well, and Guidry is a guy they clearly see could take over that role potentially. What happened in years past is pretty irrelevant to now. He missed all last season and before that was just getting used to even being a pitcher full time really.

no you don't. Very few teams ever have 3 that can consistently go 6 innings. A lot of teams don't even have 2. Last year, we didn't have a true #3 the entire season.

In SEC play here's how our Sundays went
Missouri - Shores 3.2 IP
Texas - Shores 4 IP
State - Shores 4 IP
Oklahoma - Shores 5 IP
Auburn - Shores 2 IP, Cowan 4.2 IP
Alabama - Ware 2 IP (bullpen game)
Tennessee - Evans 6 IP
A&M - Evans 3.1 IP (bullpen game)
Arkansas - Evans 3.2 IP (bullpen game)
South Carolina - Ware 1 IP (bullpen game and pitched backwards with the short week, so this was actually on Friday)

We had one outing where our pitcher lasted 6 innings on Sunday the entire SEC season

You need guys maybe stepping up come postseason and stretched longer than usual, especially if you find yourself in the loser's bracket or in a weird situation like last year where our UCLA game got rain delayed. We pieced together Sundays in 2023 and 2025 and simply had guys step up in key spots in the postseason (Ackenhausen, Herring, Cowan)

Please elaborate. Guidry threw more than 2 innings once in 2024. 15 of his 22 appearances were 1 or fewer innings.

Re-read what I wrote:

going into this year,

Talking about fall/spring scrimmages

Going into last season before he got hurt he was being talked up by the coaching staff as a potential starter

Source

quote:

Guidry had been working on new pitches and extending his durability to be a starter this season and had contended for the weekend rotation.

A lot of teams have gone to a guy to slam the door earlier in the game instead of waiting for the eighth or ninth depending on the situation.

I see Johnson using Guidry that way and not as s as prototypical closer per se.

Right now is right now, but it isn’t the SEC and it isn’t money time. In a tight game in SEC play with the lead and an opponent threatening in the 7th I could see Guidry coming in against their best hitters.

This was a bit of a courtesy by the staff and something he was pushing for.

After 3 years and a long recovery from back surgery they aren't going to get cute and try and start him all of a sudden. He is right where he needs to be.

Closers and starters are 2 completely different animals that have to use a completely different approach to pitch mix and aggression. I don’t see him as a starter. But I’m also not his coach or him so who knows.

I didn’t say relegate him to the 9th inning. A door can only be slammed when it’s open for slamming. That can happen in any of the later innings. The mentatity and function of a closer can be performed in multiple innings. Usually no more than 2. I’m good with Guidry from the 8th and the 9th anytime. Possibly the 7th in a bind.

they are not going to do anything to put him at risk of injury...period. dont understand why so many are having a tough time accepting that. right now he is going to go about 3 innings tops. by world series maybe 4 but i highly doubt he starts

now if something crazy happens and he comes back for a 5th year, his rs senior year...yea he could start but not yet.
