Seems that if a school is willing to spend the right amount of money on basketball, rapid success is attainable. The issue is how much money is LSU willing to throw at the problem. Seems football is consuming all the air in the room. Then again that is where the money is generated and most of the fan support is behind the football team. Next women's basketball and men's baseball vie for the popularity honors. Other teams are pretty much also rans and have much smaller followings. Am I wrong?
LSU will put money into it when inevitably a new coach is hired.
I get a kick out of the people who show up here with the "LSU doesn't care about basketball" crap. That is just stupid. It would be fiscally irresponsible for LSU athletics not to care about it.
Wade had things looking up but he got a little cocky and was caught on a wiretap doing things that at the time were illegal. Woodward HAD to let him go. And I don't think Wade would dispute this. He knows he fricked up.
Then Scott made a hire that looked decent on paper, but it apparently isn't going to work out and Verge will make a change when the season is over, barring something miraculous happening. Scott giving McMahon a long contract (was it 7 years?) is a bit head-scratching, but I was fine with the hire itself.
McMahon will have gotten 4 years, which is fair. You just can't go around whacking coaches 2 years in. You have to give them time and resources.
Verge will find a dynamic coach and LSU will give him all of the resources needed to compete, just like they are doing with Kiffin.

So you are telling me right here right now on jan 14th that this team with Thomas return no where in sight will be making the tournament??
I didn't say any of that. Thomas may return this week, who knows. Let the season play out and asess at that point.

. what would you need to see for mcmahon to be fired?
I have been on record on this board that I have no problem with replacing him if they don't make the tournament this year. However, if Thomas misses significantly more time I would be okay with another year even without making the tournament depending on how they look when he returns. If he is replaced do whatever it takes to bring Billy Donovan back to college basketball.

The McMahon error should’ve gone no further than last season. The fact that we have to sit through this garbage another year is disappointing. Just another two months of this hopefully.
Worst coach in the SEC and P4.

Probably because of assholes like you!

This is a false narrative
Sorry, it’s my opinion,
I see good execution of plays, but the results aren’t as good as they should be because the players aren’t equal to the task.
I think the guy can coach, but he’s not able to sell himself or the program to get players especially when he has no money.
We lack the talent to compete in the SEC. That’s obvious. You can be an X and O genius, but you have to have the horses too.

With the right coach, LSU would be Baylor in basketball.
Combine that with a DOMINANT football program under Kiffin, and I'd be thrilled.

SW admitted they didn’t back McMahon and give him resources equal to what his peers were given.
They may care, but not enough to fully fund it until the die was cast.

Verge can do so much. If the right boosters don’t buy into the new coach and pony up, there’s only so many dollars Verge can give.

It’s very simple, they predicted that McMahon would be better than the previous guy who they hate. They’re not defending McMahon they’re defending their own opinion/positions they made when McMahon was hired.

I just hate how people on here don't think that two things can't be true at the same time.
I loved the General, wish he was still here, and have no doubt he would have us in a good place right now....but I also absolutely see why Woodward had to let him go when he did. Will just wasn't as smart about covering his tracks as people like Self, Pearl, etc are.

Curiously, with only 3 weeks left in the season at a time LSU was 2-10 in SEC play and people were (rightfully) starting to question if a change would be made.
That statement was PR bullshite to justify the announcement that despite the dismal results, McMahon was going to return for a 4th season. Ed Orgeron was canned 1.5 seasons after the greatest season in school history. Paul Maineri went to a Super Regional in 2019. He was pushed out the next full season later. Nikki Fargas finished 6th and 7th in the SEC before ONE losing season ended her LSU career.
Clearly Woodward didn't show any aversion to making a coaching change at the first sign of "failure". So why did a HC who was in the midst of his second losing season in 3 years and second season finishing at the bottom of the SEC get a preemptive vote of confidence for year 4? It's because Woodward couldn't tell you the REAL reason why that was the case and the BS narrative of "no money" was issued to try to justify it...Woodward wasn't going to make the LSU job open with connected people in the state pushing him to rehire Wade.
But for anyone looking for an excuse to provide any reason for LSU's dismal results other than McMahon simply not being a good coach, it was a good as any to latch on to.
No coach in the last 50+ years at LSU has ever received such grace for such awful results than McMahon. That's not borne out of some actual belief in his ability. It's just the result of some odd mix of apathy, contrarianism, and sympathy.

Recent interview with Verge he said they are questioning whether they can fund every sport to be champions like Skip Bertman wanted. He didn’t mention MBB but..,,…,

No one predicted any such thing and there was no hate for Wade. Anyone viewing the situation objectively knew there was no quick fix. McMahon inherited a moribund program facing potential draconian sanctions. There were signs of promise in 2024, but the season ending injury to Jalen Reed and the departure of Tyrell Ward due to personal issues derailed last season. It is clear the team this year is much improved and would be contending for a tournament bid. The injuries to Thomas and Reed again have slowed the momentum but if Thomas can return soon the season can be salvaged.

Why the hell even have a basketball program at LSU ? Nobody gives a mcshitt about that sport anymore. Give all that $$ to Jay Johnson !

We basically have to split these next two games (Or pull a miracle @ FL or @ Ark) to even have a chance at the tournament.
If you start 0-7 your only hope is some how the team can win 8 of 11, which we know can't happen under this coach.

I’m always optimistic, probably to a fault, but he doesn’t have a chance if we start 0-7.

Couldn’t get past the 4th false statement in a row so I’ll just assume the entire post was fake news
