"Regarding the absurd expenses and overruns involved in the Fed Building project, I don't know what the bottomline is. Incompetence? Negligence? Corruption? Some combination of those?"
Trump's ballroom in Feb 2025 was expected to cost $100 million.
Now the cost is $400 million. Amazing how these things get out of hand. Is this incompetence? Negligence? Corruption?
Yes, I know that this is being paid for by "private donors". But don't kid yourself. All those people are getting something in return. All of them.

No, he has a few years before his presidency ends.
I knew you would be in this thread. SDVPuppet. Nothing of value. Ever.
I had decided that responding to you was beneath me, and here I am back in the gutters where you live. I need to do better.
This thread should be on another board since it has drawn too many poli-posters and OTers.

Be careful what you ask for. I might say things above your level of understanding. You don't want more of us to see how little you know.
Just think of the embarrassment you will feel.

Hey Mensa, the taxpayer ain’t paying for the renovations.
So you want government to be run by bribes, political favors, and pork bellies. Got it.
I guess if The Ballroom, The Most Beautiful Ballroom ever, runs over budget again, Trump can sell his airplane gift. Or he will just attack a country to steal their oil. Contingencies everywhere!

He responded by falsely claiming on national TV the DOJ was threatening to indict him. That set a false narrative still being carried in the press and in Congress 4 days later (look no further than the OP thread title).
The DOJ subpoened The Fed. Based on recent DOJ actions, I don’t think it’s a stretch that the subpoena is a thinly veiled threat of an indictment. Not sure how that creates a false narrative…they indicted Letitia James on something arguably more petty.

Powell is a lawyer. He lied. He knew he was lying
This is hilarious considering who the other side of this spat is. If lying is where you draw the line in the sand, you may want to do some fact checking on your president and his cronies.

Trump's ballroom in Feb 2025 was expected to cost $100 million.
When they broke ground on the demo Trump said the anticipated cost would be "around $300M, maybe more." Last month, he said "maybe up to $400M." That is for a complete tear down and rebuild. The Fed project will cost 50% more per square foot, for a renovation.
None of that is the point.
The point is, the Fed, unlike Trump, is using funds which would otherwise be remitted to the general treasury fund. There is not transparent accounting on the project. Oversight has been obfuscated. Powell has taken a duplicitous and combative posture against any further oversight of the costs or construction, claiming incredibly that such oversight threatens the independence of the Fed.

See, that is a real problem.
Trump is a boor. He misleads, exaggerates, misdirects for political ends. His repeated beating of Powell is overdone. Though, IMO the Yellen-Powell period marks some of the poorest Fed Chair performance in 50-80yrs, and the Powell critique is well earned.
How does any of that make Chairman of the Fed lying "hilarious"?

NC_, using Occam's Razor to evaluate this investigation of Powell, which is more likely?:
1) Powell somehow embezzled money from the construction costs, or,
2) The DOJ's investigation is politically driven because the DOJ's boss wants Powell taken down for not complying with the boss's orders on interest rates.

Trump Slams US Attorneys for Slow Lawfare Indictments
President Donald Trump reportedly tore into a group of U.S. attorneys at a White House event last week, complaining they weren't moving fast enough to indict people he said had weaponized the legal system.
According to The Wall Street Journal, dozens of U.S. attorneys traveled to the White House on Thursday for what had been expected to be a ceremonial photo opportunity.
But after Attorney General Pam Bondi introduced the prosecutors, Trump launched a blunt critique, calling them "weak" and ineffective and suggesting they were making it harder for Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche to carry out the administration's priorities.

So what you're saying is that my federal tax dollars aren't going to the fed renovation right? They're just spending a little bit more of the fed's profit on the reno?

One would be naive to not realize that the money donated to the ballroom will cost our country in political favors down the road. You think the doners are giving out of the goodness of their heart?

We finally agree on a comment. I am not bringing value to this thread. I am sounding like you in this thread. I typically don't engage in politically motivated comments, which is all you ever do. My hope is that I will practice better mindfulness going forward and not respond to you.
I come to this board to converse on personal financial topics and am currently slumming it down in the political abyss. I will do better. You do you.

No, it’s hilarious your presumption that the Fed chair is lying is what has you so miffed when the man indirectly behind the subpoenas entire playbook is lying.

Nor do I think he should be held accountable for not personally overseeing details in the renovation.
I do think it is possible, probably likely, that individuals/contractors involved in the work lined their pockets.
My complaint about Powell is his unwillingness to fully open the books for scrutiny under the auspices that doing so would compromise independence of the Fed.
quote:I don't buy that either. Not because Trump wouldn't do exactly what you're saying. He would. But rather because there is simply no juice in the squeeze.
The DOJ's investigation is politically driven because the DOJ's boss wants Powell taken down for not complying with the boss's orders on interest rates.
Powell is done in May.
There is virtually no displacement mechanism, certainly not vis a vis "indictment," which could root him out prior to May. So that line of reasoning is illogical.
Likewise, for interest rate influences.
