Leaving undefeated P5/BCS schools out made the regular season meaningless.

That can't happen anymore.

the people paying their NIL deals aren’t going to tolerate listening to Aggies become super obnoxious with a few Ws. It might happen in a situation that LSU finds themselves in where Thanksgiving has been forced or even the conference championships.

So question… if we’re at the point where Michigan/Ohio St loses intensity in late November (because both teams are in the 12 team playoff), will we start seeing more rivalry games move to September/early October when more is at stake?

It was a glorified exhibition basically.

Is that how people feel about every single NFL game too?

It’s not, right? So there’s still meaning, just not as much as there used to be in this situation.

Well, idiot, would you prefer watching a bunch of 48-14 meaningless bowl games?

Anyone who argues the playoffs water down the regular season is brainwashed, or stupid.

Or we remember when, if you were 1 or 2 in the polls, hell maybe top 5, every game from October on was a thrill ride with the season riding on it. For the teams below that, they were still playing for conference championships, or bowl eligibility, or spoiling someone else’s.

The real question is if rivals play the last weekend of the season and both have clinched for the conference title game. There is literally nothing to play for.

This will happen soon and will be a total joke.

Conference title games need to be removed.

No one will and that is why both will play in the championship game.

Did anyone feel like the Bama-UGA game was lessened?
Tremendously. Normally I'd stop everything to watch this matchup. However, this time I had the game on in the background while I was doing other things.

UGA's remaining games become even more meaningful going forward.
So, half the season is meaningful, whereas every game in the entire season used to be meaningful. Yes, I agree with you.

There are still 25 or so teams that feel like they have a shot at the playoffs. Usually at this point in the season that number is maybe 10.
Why don't we just give everyone a participation trophy and let everyone in the playoffs? Why stop at 25?

I think this will wind up being one of the most entertaining seasons since the BCS days.
I think the season will wind up with the same handful of teams having the only legitimate shot at winning a title.

You mean like a Bowl System where 40+ teams win a Bowl "title"?

The first round bye is meaningful for the top teams.

No.

But I already wasn’t watching those regardless.

And this isn’t a true playoff. Sure, it’ll be entertaining, but a 9-3 #12 seed Oklahoma isn’t winning a NC and is getting the shite kicked out of them most likely.

Idk, Alabama is a lock to make the playoff now, aren’t they? Or very close to one?

I’m ok with it, but I’ve absolutely had to adjust my outlook or expectations. Not once in the Georgia game was a nervous.

After the first half, it might as well have been a win for Alabama. Whoever controls the sport wants THAT in the playoff. And Alabama can lose 2, possibly 3 games and still get there.

I had a blast watching the game, but i was nearly emotionless the entire time(over the implications of a W vs L). I was certainly still having fun watching the game.

The playoff has definitely taken some steam out of the regular season. Which, is ok. The value is added on the backend.

And Bama has already clinched a playoff spot in late September. Bc they’ll also need four losses to not make it.

Nobody is getting in the playoffs with four losses. Hell, unless chaos happens nobody is getting in with three.

It absolutely does. Just wait till we get to watch a bunch of 48-14 playoff games.

That was guaranteed as soon as they agreed to equate winning the ACC to winning the SEC.

Vandy beat a team that beat the likely ACC champ on the field. Vandy will likely finish next to last in the SEC while Miami will have a 1st rd bye. Meanwhile there are four teams that would be guaranteed to go undefeated in the ACC playing in the SEC that all basically play each other plus 3 other teams who’d probably beat Miami on a neutral field.

Just wait till teams/fans realize that the expanded playoffs absolutely gut the traditional end of the year games. Say Alabama is #1 or #2 going into the Auburn game. A loss doesn't knock you down to #13. Why play Milroe? Ryan Williams? Your starting OL?
what's more likely to happen is a team being in the CCG but zero chance of making the playoffs without being a conference champion. That's when that logic will make sense, and it will happen eventually. A major rivalry game is going to be turned into a farce.

This has been the case for years but games never go away. They only get added on.

even the announcer point blank said "with the extended playoffs, it really doesn't matter as much who loses this game"

when you can say that in September before a game is even over, then you have watered down the regular season.
