That’s more than any regular season game in any other sport and more than most playoff games in most other sports. Which is why this thing will keep expanding. 6 million live viewers is one of the most valuable tv products in existence

Yeah but if you compare that to the other two games you will see why G5s don't belong. They basically lost 20 MM viewers. Just proving that no one gives a shite about G5s except for the media trying to create the controversy.

Yeah because they had so many shots at the top prize before they expanded the playoff.

Yep. The second OU shite the bed in the Fiesta Bowl, losing on two of the greatest trick plays in history, people started saying G5 schools could hang with the big boys.

And the problem with pointing to bowl games in the BCS era is they completely discount to give a shite factor by the team who's championship dreams have vanished and they are playing a team that's hard to get excited about.

How come no one points out all of the G5 upsets are at a meaningless exhibition game and not in the regular season when both teams have something on the line.

Even if I was a die hard Oregon fan I probably wouldn’t have watched that JMU game.

Ohio State vs. Miami should get better ratings when they play the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Eve

I meant Tulane three years ago.

OK, that makes more sense. But it does not look like it based on what I can find online.

The 2023 Cotton Bowl Classic between Tulane and USC averaged approximately 4.17 million viewers.

The Ole Miss vs. Tulane College Football Playoff (CFP) first-round game in December 2025 drew 6.2 million average viewers

That's really surprising. Cotton Bowl had a better network, better time slot, higher profile opponent, and wasn't a rematch of a blowout.

unlike in the past, these 2 g-5 teams werent very good

No one expected them to keep any of the games close.

This was a bad year for committee to put 2 of them in, but in some sense, i feel they did it on purpose, to hurt the g-5 chances down the road.

It was disgrace those games were even played. But Tulane and JMU earned it with the way the committee setup the whole thing so there’s not a lot to complain about, that doesn’t mean we have to watch that bullshite

The committee didn’t “put them in”

They followed the rules. Notre Dame refusing to be normal and join a conference along side 7-5 Duke winning the ACC put in two G5 teams.

It is what it is.

I'm curious as to how those "low viewership" games compared to similar matchups in a bowl game last year.

If it's similar, why would it be noteworthy? If it has more viewers, then it demonstrates that the expanded playoffs gave similar bowl games last year more meaning.

Yeah, it was Ole Miss and not the fact that they were going to blow away Tulane on a channel no one watches, going against the NFL. Add to that they got nearly 50% more viewers than Oregon did in a primetime slot. Definitely Ole Miss

People have heard about Tulane and at least it’s believable that they could have a great year and make the CFP.

But JMU has played FBS football for like 4 years… Duke probably should have had that spot

The thing about the G5s is not that they’re worse than before with the system funneling players up into P4, but also that the P4 is better than they used to be… there’s no such things as holes on a P4 roster that they can’t plug quickly now in the portal with accomplished players who will leave where they’re at to be there. The money is there and they’re in conferences players want to play in.

I doubt it would have been any different. Neither should have had that spot; it should have gone by ranking alone.

I can guarantee you if the good games were scheduled then against the nfl the ratings wouldn’t have been much better. They would’ve been better for sure but not by much.

Only reason there were two was the ACC champ was 7-5.

And the only reason the ACC champ was 7-5 is because the ACC decided to have the dumbest tie breaker off all time. Not that UVA wouldn't have gotten their shite pushed in as well

If the ACC is a real conference you have either Miami or UVA at the 10, ND or Texas at the 11. Pretty simple honestly should have just been Texas instead of Miami because they didn't deserve to get a team in after that Shitshow

The bigger issue for the P5 is that they didn't pay the majority of the house settlement stuff it was split between them and the rest of the NCAA who ended up paying more combined. So they need to throw the other schools a bone

And they were dumb to write it into the rules. The rules should be altered. They shouldn't get consideration unless they have beaten a team that was ranked in the Top 10 at some point by the playoff committee.

That is probably the highest ratings TNT ever got for any program.
