I think front offices are banking on a switch to something like those naturally tacky baseballs they used in the Olympics.

I’m happy about it. If there is anything in the tank, it’s a positive. Not sure I trust this starting staff to run it back status quo.

I like this rotation over a season (health longevity concerns aside), effectiveness and health in the post season gives me some heart burn

Now go get me Marte and a couple of bullpen arms and I'm good.

I didn't think JV would be back, but I am loving it. And I think he'd be a fool to turn down a $25M year 2 at age 40.

Let's ride

Think we pursue another SPdoubtful? I'm assuming not unless it's maybe a trade for like Gray/Castillo and we were to send some of our younger starters back

I think we add one more big contract. Whether it's Story/Semien/Marte I think it'll be a bat

I like this for postseason, assuming we are healthy

McCullers finished 7th in CY Young voting, even picking up a 3rd place vote

Even 80-90% of what Verlander was is great and what we were missing. Excited to have him back

Glad to see him back as well. Maybe you good baws can set me straight on something I read earlier today. I saw a snippet of Granato and Zierlein and they got to talking about the JV first pitch rumor that got out during the WS. They wondered if maybe there was a rift between JV and Correa. JV not being around during the season etc. Zierlein mentioned something about the tryout last week where he was throwing mid 90s and how that was “interesting” that he was doing that immediately after the World Series but for some reason couldn’t get back on the field during the season. In the comments someone mentioned that if Verlander threw even one pitch it would void an insurance policy. If that’s truly the case then it makes sense that he didn’t pitch.

You guys know anything about this? No idea how the insurance thing works in MLB or what form it even exists.

If that was the case sure, there is also a huge difference throwing 90 with people watching vs throwing 90 in a meaningful game as far as stress kn the arm.

Don’t know about insurance, but Carlos seems like the most likely candidate to raise a stink about Verlander not being around. And he’ll be somewhere else next year.

Agreed. Just seems like a lot of smoke around the whole JV throwing out the first pitch “revolt.” Given the Astros players’ personalities in general, if there was indeed backlash from them about him doing that, I have to think it was more than the fact that he wasn’t around the team during the year. Maybe he was cleared and decided he still wouldn’t pitch and the players found out. No idea, just throwing shite out there.

A lot of the big contracts are insured. I think it’s usually a piece (like 50% or so).

I understood why Verlander didn’t pitch last year, he was realistically only going to be back for late in the playoffs and he hadn’t thrown in a live game in like 15 months. I still don’t totally understand why he wasn’t in the dugout with the team. He clearly doesn’t have any bad blood toward the organization though. I still don’t totally buy the first pitch radio BS

Here is an article on contract insurance (warning WaPo)

It’s come up a few times in the past with guys like Ellsbury, Pedroia, Prince Fielder

He threw about 25 pitches. Showing off all your pitches and looking good in that situation isn't nearly the same as pitching in a game.

I'll find his tweet. He basically said the Astros wouldn't let him rehab and he had to find his own place.

I personally think all the first pitch rumor stuff is just crap. I never heard anything about Carlos and JV having issues and they talk all the rumors on 790 here.

There are tons of rumors about all this kind of stuff. I think most of it is crap clickbait from talking heads that want to get noticed.

Here on 790 this evening, they talked a bit about JV having a really good relationship with Crane and that the 2 of them play golf together occasionally. They definitely felt it was a JV/Crane deal.

Sure, I get it. Just quoting what was said.

In general I agree with this too. However Granato is a pretty well connected guy who has been on the Houston sports scene for a couple of decades now. He could have been fed bad info but I wouldn’t totally discount it.

I couldn’t find the actual tweet because it was in comments of someone calling out JV.

Late to the party but I’m jacked! It’s certainly a risk, but I think it’s well worth it. I’ll take my chances with JV over giving a long term deal to some of these other guys.

Add one big bat and some bullpen and this team is every bit of the one that just won the AL. LFG!
