Out of nowhere. He’s a pretty exciting prospect, even if it’s only short term

I do like they we are trying out different contract structures. Feels like we are behind the times in that regard.

Absolutely. Great to see us involved in the NPB market as well. This guy is going to be fun to watch

I found a negative. He's horrendous at controlling the running game. Definitely an Astro.

Talk about unexpected

I figured we’d end up with JV eating innings for $10 M

How does this affect the salary cap and is a corresponding move necessary?

I really don’t remember what we had to work with

Fangraphs has us just under 238. Tax is at 244.

Thx

I’m guessing it would take a unique situation for us to give up picks and money again, so $6M ain’t much left to get an OF and/or reliever

Chandler (I know we don’t really like him but his pod does produce some good nuggets and he has his finger on the pulse. Seemingly a pretty dependable insider) said he thinks they will likely end up moving one of Walker or Parades to free up some money.

The Walker stuff seems like a long shot since the teams that seemed like a fit (Mets and Red Sox) addressed their 1st base issues. If the Astros pay down some of the salary and receive an outfielder think he can still help a team where he’s not the focal point of the offense. Losing Parades would really suck, but the return would probably be pretty good controllable talent.

They need an impact outfield bat even though it’s kind of a logjam out there right now even with Yordan primarily DH’ing. If they can find a corner outfielder they could allow Cam to season in AAA some if he has a poor spring and just run Sanchez out there.

They also need to find a backup catcher maybe. Salazar is a fine player, great teammate and pretty good defender but wouldn’t hurt to have someone with a better bat

LMJ will be the new reliever in the pen.

I expect Walker to be packaged with one or two players with some value to get an OF.

If Astros can dump that salary, that frees up $20MM to pursue legitimate help.

Is this the year Trevor Bauer returns to MLB?

As a Cub fan, I was hoping to get Imai. I'm a bit surprised at the years and AAV being a bit below all projections and some teams backing off even at what appears to be a bargain contract? Especially given he is a Boras guy.

Any speculation on why the market value seemed to fall short of expectations?

Bauer posted a 4.5 ERA in Japan last year and got sent down to the equivalent of NPB AAA

They are not going to unload Walker without eating a good bit of the money or taking back another bad contract

Well, he’s small for one.

Then the obvious on how well his game will translate. There’s probably some numbers somewhere on him vs MLB hitters in international competition that aren’t so flattering

I wonder if something came up late or it was just the folks that project these things missed some stuff. I mean the Athletic projected him at 8 years $190 million and another had like 6 for $150!!!

In general I do think teams have wisened up recently on using the posting deadline to their benefit as far as leverage, winding it down to the very end. Not sure why the market for Imai didn’t materialize as expected though
