Jim Brown singlehandedly changed a rule in lacrosse that is still in effect today. He used to tuck the ball to his chest and no one could get the ball from him. He was the best lacrosse player in America when he played for Syracuse. Now all lacrosse players have to keep the ball outside of their bodies.

LOL. He has to be considered in any discussion of the greatest athlete ever as an Olympic decathlon champion like Rafer Johnson.

Bo Jackson just has marketing and media hype behind him. There are far more appropriate answers to this question than bo. How bout Dave Winfield for example..
quote:
Following college, Winfield was drafted by four teams in three different sports. The San Diego Padres selected him as a pitcher with the fourth overall pick in the MLB draft and both the Atlanta Hawks (NBA) and the Utah Stars (ABA) drafted him. Though he never played college football, the Minnesota Vikings selected Winfield in the 17th round of the NFL draft.

Jackie Robinson has to be considered in this conversation.
He and Thorpe stand out as far as all-around athletic ability.

Winfield was drafted in baseball, basketball and football. He should be near the top.

LBJ is the best athlete I've ever seen. His combination of physical tools: size/speed/athleticism/power/endurance/durability mixed with his intangibles: mature/leader/competitiveness/iq/discipline is the rarest I've ever seen. I am truly in awe watching him a lot of times.

and there's this tiny gymnast Simone Biles who's now a 2 time US National and World champion. That girl is stupidly athletic. Just crazy how explosive she is
Did you really put a gymnastics chick in the greatest athletes of all time discussion?

Sounds like he found a loophole in the rules. That's a lot different than being the greatest in a sport.

He's in the lacrosse Hall of Fame, so he was pretty decent. And what he did was perfectly legal at the time, sooooo.....

Emil Zatopek
This guy was pretty dominate in long distance running. The Czech team was short on runners during the olympics and he decided he would run a marathon for the first time....during the olympics. During the 1952 olympics, he set world records in the 5,000m, 10,000m, and the marathon (on his first attempt).
As he was running in the marathon, he went up besides the British (and current world record holder) Jim Peters and asked if they were running too fast. Peters said "No" even though he was running pretty hard, so Emil ran past him and went on to break his record.
Ann Trason was also insane at long distance running. During the high point of her career, she was running something near an ultra every other month, and won every one, like 64 straight, in the women's category.
Running fascinates me.
