Are South Panola and Moss Point not powers in Mississippi anymore?

Except for 1A, the home teams really dominated tonight

The playoff system that usually requires the higher ranked team to play on the road in in the later rounds is pretty arse-backwards. If the LHSAA really thinks it is necessary to have home games for the worst seeded teams, then they should require the better seeded teams to travel in the first round of the playoffs only. There are too many advantages to playing at home to reward the worst seeded teams later in the playoffs.

I know they had some injury issues but how did Curtis not only end their season so poorly, but just look bland nearly all season outside the first few weeks? They have a ton of D1 talent and returned nearly all of their key team members from a team that absolutely destroyed CHS last year. Pretty big meltdown. Next year will definitely be a big rebuilding year. Some of this kids have been playing varsity since 8th and 9th grade year.

Also, anyone know the schedule for next week for select championships?

And I am guessing that only negatively effects catholic right?

Catholic has beaten evangel, Curtis, and Rummel all in the playoffs

They have also beaten the 5a champs a few times, but it’s safe to say their titles are only due to the split

It’s just laughable butthurt

First off, I graduated from CHS in 1993 (don’t know if you caught that part of my post), so I’m happy for their success. No butthurt here. I realize that they’ve beaten Curtis, Evangel, Rummel, Thomas More, etc., but let’s get real a first round bye, 2 wins and you’re in the ship is ridiculous.

That’s a LOT different than having 2 extra games to prepare/stay healthy for and compete in before then getting a shot at the title.

Catholic became a championship winning program when they got Gabe Fertitta. The timing happened to coincide with the split. He’s beaten everyone who is anyone in his 4 years at Catholic.

Thats the same for everybody

Catholic has been the best team in the combined old 5a multiple times these last few years

Saying they only have a title due to the split is foolish

Maybe, maybe not. That’s why they play the games.

I tend to think you might be right.

He’s also 1-2 Vs Lab & has losses to St Amant & EA & an embarrassing blowout loss last year in the D1 title game

Dude is far from infallible

The D1 playoffs are simply a joke from what old 5a used to be. You play 3 games for a state tile, with the first one pretty much being a bye week. There are some strong D1 teams at the top, namely Curtis & Rummel but that is hardly a representation of running thru the old 5a bracket

In all fairness, they did win one under Weiner in the split era.

Good point. Roughly speaking, you’re correct. See above.

Yes he has, I just think eliminating 2 games and a 1st round bye makes a huge difference.

I’m not following how 5A is a tougher championship to win because the top teams have to play an extra game against Benton and Central Lafourche.

Fertitta ran the offense in 2015.

True, but every D1 school voted against the split. What are they supposed to do? They all agree, the D1 playoffs are more of a “tournament” than playoffs but it is what it is.
