Ah, but did he complete "a football move"?
I abhor, at times, what the NFL has become.

I was initially in the “it was the correct call” camp. now that that the excitement has worn off and a lot of still shots have come out I think it was a catch and the replay officials fricked up.
That being said can we make what is and isn’t “a catch” objective for once so it isn’t so fricking confusing. This kind of a call shouldn’t be hard but here we are….

Yep, I’ve watched it a bunch from different angles at different speeds - I have him catching it and taking two steps before going to the ground; catch, down by contact.

That was 100% an int am shocked this is even remotely controversial
The best explanation so far is the one a few posts up. If at the time where we clearly see the ball in the defender's hand, the ball is on the ground instead, would that be catch and fumble or an incomplete pass. The answer is obvious.

does if you catch it going to the ground with zero football moves or steps.
Well genius, then explain hiw the db controlled it to the ground and made a move.
The offense caught it, went down, and rolled over BEFORE the db grabbed it

Then you don’t understand the rule.

No he’s not.

It’s an INT. Great play by the DB. Cooks never had control of it and the DB ripped it out before the ball ever hit the ground

Everyone seemingly forgetting that you have to complete the process of the catch which includes maintaining control through the tackle.

It does if you catch it going to the ground with zero football moves or steps.
How many more bounces off the ground and skidding needed to take place for him to have survived the ground?

I think they’d have called down by contact.

If we’re going with y’all’s interpretation, which is as good or better than any other, why the hell aren’t defenders AGGRESSIVELY going after footballs at all times? I’m spearing football and wrists and anything I can on the ground before the would be ball carrier stops moving on the ground.
How long do they have to survive the ground? I’m punting forearms if you haven’t come to a complete stop on the ground.
Not saying y’all are wrong here, but what a silly rule. Cooks caught the football and was touched down with control still. The rule should be changed.

They do
I think the fact that the defender ended up with the ball is skewing the perception quite a bit. If that ball is on the ground, and not in the DBs hands when we first see the clear shot of the ball, I think that most people would say that's an incomplete pass.

Correct....
1. Receiver has firm control of the ball when his knee is contacting the ground.
2. defender is touching the receiver at the same time that the receiver's knee is touching the ground.
3. receiver is down - completion, play over.

Which is exactly how they rule this very similar play

If tweet fails to load, click here. As the rules are written, a tie goes to the offense. The only way it should have been a pick is if Cooks was bobbling it on the way to the ground, which I never saw. I only saw Cooks having it firmly.

It's funny watching LSU fans cry about this

Of you have to survive the ground for that long why is this a TD?
He hits the ground and the ball bobbles then he lets it go as he rolls over
