Yeah, there is a pretty significant amount of people that get livid pissed if you talk about good personality traits and good deeds that Miles has done.
I like that they do that because it makes it easier to decipher who to not take serious.

I like the ones who attribute every failure directly to Miles yet every success (and there have been many of them) to his coordinators and players, or luck.

I don't think so. He is seen by many as a top 25 coach. Some may have him higher, some lower. I think he is probably more realistically 15 or higher myself, but to be "grossly underrated" would seem to be people think he is awful

Can you show me any lists that don't have miles as a top 25 coach? Thanks.

I don't think it's fair to say he just inherited a good situation from Saban, although there's some truth to that.
People have inherited better situations and run them into the ground in a short time (Larry Coker, Frank Solich). If you want to give Saban credit for leaving great teams in 2005-2006, that's fair, even 2007, though t hat team included some guys recruited by Miles. But the 2010-2012 teams had the same record (34-6) won and SEC title and played in the BCS CG and those are all Miles players. Where LSU is now (good and bad) is all due to Miles, not because Saban left a great situation. For all the talk about how "lucky" he is, replacing Saban only to have Saban go to Alabama 2 years later is about the worst luck you could have. If Saban stays in the pros, Miles has at least 1, maybe 2 more NC's. He's a not a great x and o's guy and is way too conservative on offense made worse by abysmal recruiting and development of QB's. But as CEO coach, he's overall done a good job though after 11 years, if he doesn't make a run this year, it is time to move on.

What player wouldn't want to play for a guy that lets you fail 10+ drug tests before you get suspended or hey, you just kicked a man in the head while he's down lets have a team vote to see what your peers think.
If you are really a UGA fan that's pretty funny

He may make some tactical errors here and there, but the players LOVE playing for this guy.
so being friends with your players is more important than good coaching?

I think his "nice guy" personality actually inspires the teams to play hard for him.
i'd rather them play smart.

but I think he makes boneheaded playcall decisions here and there.
just here and there?

He has won a national championship, and made it to another national championship...
so did larry coker.

with the exception of coker it would be hard to find a coach who inherited a better situation.

That was my point. It isn't like people have him as the 75th best coach. I think most probably have him in the top 15, and no one in the top 15 can be "grossly" underrated IMO

Yeah, that post 2004 power house 9-3 team with absolutely no offensive line recruiting is the best situation a coach ever walked into.

Ron Zook, Will Muschamp, Mark Helfrich, Larry Coker, Frank Solich, Mike Dubose

Could coach but he gets a bad rep, because he comes off as an idiot.
Posted on 3/30/16 at 11:22 am to AmericanSpirit
No... I love LSU and he is paid way too much to be an average coach at best.

I think he has two years left on the deal. And Harris would be a senior.
He gets two years.
Would your panties be in a bunch if Les wins the SEC west and SEC champ game and goes to the playoff? You know that if he does that in either of his two years, he will get an extension. In fact, if he goes 11-1, with a loss to an SEC team, and gets into the playoff with an 11-1 he will also get an extension even if Bama wins the SEC west and SEC championship.
Bama 1 seed
LSU 3 seed
Clem 2 seed
idk 4 seed.

He's a players coach, that's it. In this day & age, it's VERY difficult to win at the % he's done since 2005. The only problem I have is he is horrible at making adjustments at halftime, and sticks to his Woody Hayes / Bo 1970 gameplan in the 2nd half
Posted on 3/30/16 at 12:05 pm to Paul Orndorff
I think he's a top 5-top 10 coach. His record against coaches who have won national championships was pretty impressive before the current losing streak to Bama. (It was quite a bit over .500) Plus, we have a winning record in games that we trail in and that regular season winning streak against non conference foes. Miles' biggest problem is he replaced the best coach in college football and that same coach went to a huge division rival. If Saban had stayed in the NFL or gone to Notre Dame/Texas/USC/Ohio State and Alabama hired Rich Rod, things would look a lot different.
It's going to be very tough to replace Miles. To hire three top notch coaches in a row is a difficult task.

He's not underrated. But some people are a bit hard on him. If he would just change the damn offense he wouldn't have 1/10 of the haters. He brings in amazing talent. LSU produces wonderful defenses. And the best coach of all time is in his division. He's doing well everything considered. If he'd go a different direction with the offense I think he'd have more success and less heat.

For the 1,000th time. Tell me who lsu can bring in that could do better not named Saban, harbaugh or Meyer. I like les. A great recruiter and his players love him. He is a bit hardheaded about his offensive game planning, but as vanilla as his offense is, the other team knows what's coming and most of the time the other team can't stop it.

The implication that no other coach could recruit well and win at LSU is absurd. Herman, Jimbo, Smart come to mind.
Hell even up and comers like Aranda, Chris Ash, Kendal Briles, David Gibbs and Doug Meachem are all guys that will have big time HC gigs in the future. They've all done very well as coordinators and are primed to take over a program. With a talent rich state and a loaded roster, I'd look for any of them to be competing for SEC titles within 2-3 years at LSU.
And I'm not bashing Les. I agree that he has been underrated for the most part. But this whole "well who would LSU get?!" is a ridiculous line of thinking. College football is huge and there are good coaches all over the country.

he has a couple of pretty big holes but overall he's definitely one of the better coaches out there.
We'll see if the drama from last November really has scared him into changing with the times like it appears. if so he may have a very nice 2nd act ahead of him. if not he'll probably be gone in a couple of years.
