Likely a mutual decision from both parties. He’s a good coach, but it was time.

19 Seasons and he'll leave a completely empty coaching tree. I don't think that's ever happened.

Bruce Arians? He had one year in Indy before jumping to the Cardinals

Arians was the Wide Receivers coach and OC for Bill Cowher. Tomlin inherited him from his staff. His first NFL experience was on Marty Schottenheimer's staff for a handfull of years in the early 90's, he coached there with Cowher.

Both he and Cowher are in Schottenheimer's tree.

I'm grateful for his time as coach and that amazing SB win as well as being competitive on a yearly basis, but it was time. I'll always be a Steelers fan first, but will root for him as well if he decides to coach elsewhere.

It was time, but 19 seasons without a below .500 record is crazy.

I have been very anti-Tomlin for the past 5 years, just because it was time. He missed the window in the mid-2010's with Ben in his prime and didn't manage to make a Super Bowl with that roster. When that window closed and it was time for somewhat of a rebuild and the Steelers went into an extended .500 mode it was time to move on.

I appreciate his time, but am excited for a new start. Things were obviously stale. If he coaches again, he'll do well and a new locker room will definitely benefit him. In the end it was time for him and the organization to start anew.

Smart on the Steelers part to let him resign so they will retain his rights. If he gets back into coaching it will be an ala Sean Peyton deal where they will get potential draft picks.

Dumb take.

When Nate Burleson’s playing career was finished no one was begging for him to go into tv either and look where he is now.

That is a crazy stat. Not even someone going to the college rankings?

Maybe they will hire the first female HC.

Tomlin has been there so long, we passed that level years ago. We're on to hiring gays and trannies now.

None. No head coaches have elevated through his staff. He typically hired retreads or guys that flamed out and didn't get considered for elevated roles.

He was big on hiring guys that had been fired in other places, like Tyrel Austin and Arthur Smith. His first several years 2007-2010 he just had Bill Cowher's old staff. They eventually moved on and he filled them with guys that had experience elsewhere. He never hired young and developed staff. The few guys that worked through the Steelers org and became OC's or DC's like Randy Fichter, were originally hired under Cowher.

Will be very interesting to see who the Steelers go with. Likely a young guy they can keep around for awhile. Tomlin was 34 when he was hired.

The Steelers have been pretty lucky with their last three head coaching hires.

Since 1969 the team has had three head coaches.

Chuck Noll 1969-1991 (won 4 Super Bowls)
Bill Cowher 1992-2006 (won 1 Super Bowl)
Mike Tomlin 2007-2025 (won 1 Super Bowl)

The next team with least coaches in that time span is the Vikings with 9 coaches.

The Saints have had 19 head coaches 12 full time and 7 interim) from 1967 - present.

The average coaching tenure in the NFL is 3.5 years. Even counting the interim coaches that's average for the nfl dumbass
