A 23 year old stadium the county still owes a billion dollars on over the next 30 years and they're trying to leverage a new taxpayer funded stadium
Such a racket
The Bears stadium deal is right up there with this one. After paying on the debt for 24 years they still owe more than was originally borrowed
This is from late 2022:
quote:
But as the press and public focused on the aesthetics of the stadium, which would become the smallest in the National Football League, few examined the fine print of the deal itself: a $587 million plan where the Bears and the NFL each chipped in $100 million, with the remaining $387 million to be financed by public bonds, backed by a hotel/motel tax levied in the city of Chicago.
Documents obtained by NBC 5 Investigates show the actual bond issue by the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority came to $398 million. But today, more than 20 years after that money was borrowed, the ISFA still owes over $383 million in principal, and more than $256 million in interest.
That’s a total of over $640 million, $63 million more than was originally borrowed, even after making payments for more than 20 years.

Where would they move the franchise that would add value? If I'm Dallas, I'm calling their bluff.

I’m not totally opposed to local governments throwing in on a stadium, it brings a shite ton of direct and indirect economic activity to the area, but this is absolutely insane.

Pretty sad to see. The mavs were a great franchise

Eventually everyone has to quit this shite, and say enough is enough.
Doesn’t matter if you’re red, blue, purple, yellow, up, down, left or right. We the people are getting fricked over and over again on these deals.

The Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, which financed the original stadium, still owes $1 billion on the development, and is not scheduled to pay it off fully until 2056.
Don’t they still owe on the Astrodome?
They are the Mickey Loomis of government sports agencies

Dallas is the 5th biggest media market in thr US. The NBA wouldn’t let them go without a team for long, either by expansion or some small market team relocating. League could charge an insanely high expansion team fee for a market of Dallas’ size. When was the last time one of the big 4 leagues offered up the opportunity for an expansion team in a top 5 media market?
This is why I think the team could actually move to Vegas.
The NBA would pocket a huge relocation fee and an even bigger expansion fee

Move back to Reunion Arena. Mavs one night, World Class Championship Wrestling "Star Wars" the next.

I thought American Airlines was pretty nice when I was last there but it’s been a few years. I guess that isn’t really relevant though
Went there this season pre-trade, and I thought the arena was incredible. Inside of the arena, court area…it is what it is. I would imagine pretty much all the NBA arenas are gonna be pretty similar inside in this day and age. As many seats as possible stuffed in. I was towards the bottom of the upper deck and thought the view was still pretty damn good. But the concourses, bathrooms, concession areas, etc were what really got my attention… absolutely immaculate. Like being in a 5 star hotel.
Now this was my first arena to go to outside of the PMAC or smaller places like LaTech, Centurylink Center or whatever it’s called now in Shreveport, etc. But the nice-ness and quality of the building would blow away the PMAC, Super Dome, and any of the other smaller places I’ve been and it’s not particularly close. Hard to compare it to the many baseball parks and outdoor football stadiums I’ve been to as they’re outside…but definitely beats all of them too.

I say this as the biggest sports fan i knew for the first 35+ years of my life. I hope the whole industry completely collapses on itself. These a holes (players, owners, executives, coaches) all of them can get fricked

Yall shite on European soccer but those owners are held to account and have to build their own fricking stadiums. They get laughed off for demanding that tax payers pay for them.

Just don't look at where the money comes from.
EPL ownership is how extremely rich people launder dirty money. One of their teams is owned by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund. Another of their teams was owned by Roman Abramovich for years.

I get it but you are talking a few cases. Arsenal had to build their own stadium. Tottenham as well. Manchester United can't even update theirs because they are poor af, Everton is all ownership. So on and on.
I mean go to Spain and Real fricking Madrid the biggest team on Earth has to pay for their own updated/kinda new stadium.

Why would somebody move a from Seattle to Oklahoma City?

This was their plan all along.
Cuban was mad about the AAC because the Perots developed all the land around the AAC and, in his mind, made a killing off his back.
He wanted to do the same thing with the Adelsons elsewhere using this gambling legalization strategy. I get texts from them every day now pushing for legalization.
I think the part where Cuban screwed up was he thought they would show him loyalty and let him stay involved and instead they showed him the door.

Just like wives, it’s cheaper to keep her… and for basketball it’s cheaper to keep the team you have
