I drank and did magic tricks with Johnny Manziel and his drunk grandpa about a year ago at a hotel in Waco.

Most random thing ever.

Played tennis with Linford Christie for a few games(was playing at the same club in London)...nice guy. Had a few classes with Shaq and he was always great. Wayne Gretzky is nice guy if not too animated- no knock on him- just his personality. Bernie Williams is an unbelievable a-hole. All I got.

dated Billy cannon's niece in mid-1980's - entire family was down to earth. Billy's brother Harvey was one of the smartest people I have ever met. I have a raiders signed picture in my office - a treasured item.

I have met a few athletes none really stand out. My friend did caddie on the pga tour for numerous years and we did attend a masters practice round about 8 years ago - he said that that was the first time that he saw Augusta National from outside the ropes. And that this was his first time to attend as a patron. He caddied for Tom Pernice - we did follow him on his practice round and met a few golfers and heard numerous stories.
The funniest is a about the Spanish golfer with the pony tail? can't recall his name - his nickname is "crimedog" because he doesn't pay.

High fived David Toms on the dance floor in New Orleans the night before the 2007 national title game and had a beer with Bert Jones before LSU'S Sugar Bowl appearance in 1986.

Met Marcus Lattimore at the movies in Pensacola. Very nice guy and had a concrete hand shake. Called me and my wife by name and said have a good night when the movie was over. Thought that was very cool.

Emmit Smith is an a-hole.

Derrick Brooks was a really nice guy.

Roy Jones Jr is a very nice guy.

I've only encountered 3 in real life. Paul O'Neill was super nice, caught me off guard because I kinda thought he'd be a prick. Bob knight was cool as well, very chill and calm away from the court. Pete Carroll was every bit the a-hole I expected him to be.

At TPC in 2012, Tiger Woods walks through after 17 which is the island, going to 18. It's the closest fans get to the golfers as they have to walk through a small alley. The fans are all excited, yelling "go get 'em Tiger", and he just ignores everyone and offers no acknowledgment. Then his handler, comes through right after and tells everyone to "cool it down".

The next group through has Phil Mickelson in it. On his walk through he is high-fiving kids, signing a golf ball, and chatting with fans.

Keep in mind that neither of them are winning so it's the same set of circumstances for each.

TL;DR:

Tiger is a Dick. Phil is cool.

I have ran into him on a few occasions but the one time that stands out was in 2006, I watched Bernard Hopkins train for his fight against Antonio Tarver at the Sheraton in New Orleans on Canal.

After I told him hello and he was cool as can be.

A few years later I gave a presentation in the same room he trained.

Stafford came to Athens on a lions bye week and went to bourbon(biggest freshman bar). Just said hi to him but he owned the place...walked behind the bar and poured his own drinks and had a line of girls trying to get with him.

Spoke to roger goodell for a minute. He was a nice guy but I guess he has to be really sociable for that job.

I've met a lot of athletes from my time as a sports writer and then out here, but my favorite will always be from high school. We were hosting a baseball tournament my junior year and after one of the games me and a few friends were talking to a few guys from Austin Westlake and we all decided to go to CiCi's between games. Well one of the dudes had this 2 inch by half inch fur patch of a mole/birthmark on his right cheek and we all talked about the guy with the huge furry mole for about 2 weeks.

Fast forward a year and I'm watching a Purdue football game and they cut to a close up shot of the new freshman QB from Austin Westlake and I'm like hey, it's the guy with the mole! So me and my friends spent a couple weeks making fun of Drew Brees' super weird mole and he went on to win a Super Bowl. It'll be a good story to teach my kids with if I ever have them.

I met Magic Johnson in LA in 1994. I was not a fan of he or the Lakers. He was a great guy. I just had a brief conversation with him. I became a fan when he made his comeback in 1997.

In the early 1990's Eddie Fuller worked out at the health club I worked at in the off season. He was backing up Thurman Thomas for the Bills. There were several guys who worked out there who had been to camp or who had briefly been on the practice squad of an NFL team. Most of these guys were complete assholes who had not really ever made an NFL team. They all came in the club with the tightest spandex they could fit into. Eddie had a legit run in the league and was as down to earth and cool as he could be. He just came into the club in an old pair of sweats and worked out. I remember he drove a Toyota Supra and a Nissan Pathfinder. Both were nice cars but nothing too flashy.

met many current and former LSU players, coaches, and higher ups at work....

Glenn Dorsey was one of the ones that stood out in the good way... Eric Reid, surprisingly, was one that stood out negatively...

Tyrann Mathieu tried to sell me heroin once. At least, I'm pretty sure that's what he was trying to say. English apparently isn't his first language.
