re: SEC, Big 10 deciding whether playoff expansion will be 16 or 24 teams

Based on this year, it should be 10.
I can’t imagine having worse representation of playoff teams than Tulane and James Madison…but here we are.
Maybe the proposal is simply to call many of those other bowl games “playoff games” for the purpose of interest and revenue. Fewer players would opt out, but most of those fringe teams don’t have the talent worth watching a game for.

But not a 6 loss Minnoesota...

SEC better hope for 24 teams and lean on the media during selection the way this has been going the last 3 years....they need as many Lotto balls in the Tournament as they can get.

It's the same as affirmative action. A deserving, better team will be at home because they were jumped by an undeserving AQ that played in some janky arse conference.

Around here, full retard = pointing out inconvenient facts that disrupt the circle jerks.

Realistically there are about 8 teams good enough to win championship so 12-15-24 makes no sense unless u are gonna do away with other bowl games but who knows maybe NIL make it possible for more to be in hunt

We'd end up with 4 loss iowa making the playoffs
Iowa came out and beat up on a heisman finalist and team the SEC lobbied was a legit contender in this current 12 team format. Led by 2 scores most of the way.
It wasn’t like when they beat Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin by a combined score of 118-19, with the closest game being 40-16, but it was an impressive showing.

fricking retarded. Just skip the regular season and have a 278 team tournament at this point

Honestly can someone tell me what is wrong with 12?
It's two less games than 16 teams and 6 less games than 24 teams. Viewership is through the roof and ESPN wants to capitalize on that market through ad sells. FOLLOW THE MONEY!
By applying the playoff tag to some of their bowl game match ups they can increase viewership anywhere from 30-300% while making the bowl games that their competition carries completely irrelevant.
Additionally it will give ESPN access to the "dead" weekend between conference championship weekend and the first round of the playoffs. This will kill the Army/Navy game as we know it as ESPN redirects the 10 MM viewers from the only game in town from CBS to the playoff games.
This will eventually be 32 teams once they kill the conference championship games.

What an absolute farce.
They want they exact same 6-8 "premier" teams every year no matter what.
Michigan, Alabama, Texas, etc. 8-4, still in with room to spare.
The name brand SEC and Big Ten teams will be in the field every single year
College football will just be college basketball

24 team would be great. 9-24 play an 8 game round 1 for the right to play the top 8, who get byes. With wildly imbalanced schedules, there isn’t usually much difference between 9-24. Eliminate the CCGs and do the play ins that week.
Honestly, 24 is probably better than 16 because you get rid of the weaker teams ranked from 9-16 via the “play-in” first round. Then you have a stronger 16 team playoff after that.

I’m done if this happens
Posted on 1/11/26 at 9:38 pm to RelicBatches86
The correct format is 16 teams, seeded by the BCS formula.
