re: Why hasn't there been a 49ers or Joe Montana 30 for 30

As somebody who didn't get to watch the fab five team live, I really enjoyed their 30 for 30

I'd much rather see a 30 for 30 over those good Florida Marlin teams than Joe Montana and the 49'ers
Agreed. The rise, success, and dismantling of those two Florida Marlin teams is pretty interesting, and seems to have been somewhat forgotten the past 20 or so years. It would definitely be a story in line with 30 for 30's "off the beaten path" mission.
I'm a Yankees fan, and I often find myself thinking about the break in the '90s championship years and the 2003 series, and I always seem to think "wait, who won the series that year? [think for 5 minutes and then go to Wikipedia] Crap that's right, it was the Marlins."

I don't know, man. 30 for 30s were always hard hitting, then that first one about The U just seemed like a puff piece with Uncle Luke giggling about the crooked things he did.
Could not agree more.
I've said it countless times on this board whenever the subject of the The U 30 for 30 comes up, but it was the most consistently overrated sports documentary I've ever seen, and it's unquestionably in the bottom tier of the original 30 for 30s.
It was a complete puff piece rife with revisionist history, produced by a Miami grad who basically approached it as a fanboy project. It posited that Miami's success out of nowhere was wholly unique to them while completely ignoring the fact that both FSU and Florida started rising to prominence at roughly the exact same time. Miami's success during that period was more ado to recruits beginning to stay home and in-state schools enjoying the fruits of the most fertile recruiting state in the country than some hip hop image.
And I say all of that was someone with absolutely no dog in this fight, as I'm not a fan of an ACC (or Big East) rival and don't particularly care about south Florida football.

I thought OJ was a dumb idea, but it ended up being a great historical document. That said, the spirit of digging up unknown stories began dying with things like Fab Five, and is being killed by Darryl/Doc and the 85 Bears, etc.
Agree with this, too.
The first volume was extremely well done and line with their desire to go off the beaten path and make documentaries about events, games and athletes in sports who were/are vaguely known or have been forgotten with the passage of time.
That started to change when they essentially started giving former athletes and/or media personnel a platform to self-produce or advance their own projects or agendas, as evidenced by stuff like The Fab Five, Ghosts of Ole Miss, Brian And The Boz (which is hands down the worst 30 for 30), Youngstown Boys, When The Garden Was Eden, and Trojan War, just to name a few.
This shift as of late to do more well-known topics like the '85 Bears, O.J. and Phi Slamma Jamma just proves that they've come off the rails as it pertains to that original mission.

I'm a huge 49er fan....
And this wouldn't be needed.
There is not interesting twist in this particular topic. Just a football machine for a decade. Not many of the players were involved in any big scandals, etc.
I don't see the fun in it.

The vast majority are still well done. The ones that suck like Fab Five and The U are not true 30 for 30s. They are shameless ratings grabbers specifically designed to keep a big audience after a popular lead-in like the Heisman ceremony or Bracket Sunday.
Other notes:
1. A Joe Montana doc is over-reliant on NFL Films content, which can be stingy about sharing--especially when they have a competing program over which they maintain editorial control.
3. They don't do many "fanboy" bios. You can get that on A Football Life. They would probably focus on a unique aspect of his career, like his rivalry with Steve Young or the Cotton Bowl win over Houston.

No one mentioned Bad Boys yet? I watch that one every time it's on TV.

yeah I really don't get the love affair some here have with that one. It must mostly because people just love those teams because the doc sucked. The potential was there but instead you just got former players talking about how super awesome they were. The 85 Bears was a solid behind the scenes doc, this just wasn't.
I still laugh when the rapper talks about the downfall and mentions Butch Davis as the guy who tore it down. You fricking moron, he's the one that built it back.

30 for 30 is about shining light on less known sports stories.
A Football Life on NFLN is more suited to the Niners of the 80's and 90's. They've done several so far, not Joe but I'm sure they'll get to him soon.

Zero controversy .....

The only storyline that I would find remotely interesting is the Montana-Young rivalry, and big picture that wasn't really that big of a deal.

You mean the fight that never happened? Just some announcers not knowing

I don't think it's accurate to lump The U and Pony Excess into the same category. neither fit the 30 for 30 mold of "unheralded stories", but one came across like a documentary, the other as a long hype video

If Larry Coker giving an interview saying 2 of his players were knocked out means it didn't happen, then ok
