Indeed.
If not for Bourdain, I doubt I would have found myself last year on a three week jaunt in Japan, purely for pleasure.
It liberates the vandal to travel--you never saw a bigoted, opinionated, stubborn, narrow-minded, self-conceited, almighty mean man in your life but he had stuck in one place since he was born and thought God made the world and dyspepsia and bile for his especial comfort and satisfaction.
- Mark Twain, The American Abroad speech, 1868

There is nothing better than dropping yourself , with no backup plan, into a world you don’t fully understand. And just see how you do and what you can learn . That’s basically the story or my 20s. I can’t imagine not having done that. And a lot of people do , you meet them looking scruffy, carrying a backpack on a trail or ferry somewhere. And they tell you how they left their corporate gig , took a plane and started wandering. If more people left their bubble, they’d appreciate the world and our country so much more.

Something is going o
Social media brotato.
Everyone is in a constant one up contest now because of social media. There’s a real pressure now to be able to put up this fake arse life on social media to show how awesome your life is.
The constant toxicity of social media means that people who are different and weird get ostricised 324/7 instead of just at school or just when they see one person.
Coupled with the fact that we are obscenely overmedicated and have all but eliminated any sort of delayed satisfaction we get from things. We want results and we want results now, if we don’t get said results now, then you’re a failure. While all your friends and family are living perfectly happy lives (according to their social media)

Wow, a well thought out, well written, mature post.
Totally unsuitable and inappropriate for this board.

Many people did that stuff growing up with their parents and siblings. Bourdain seemed like a huge a-hole. Still, I don’t wish death on the man. He was a cook, wrote a couple of books, and hosted sparsely watched tv shows. Golf clap and RIP.

I’m downvoting your compliment !of me because it’s false and snarky. I find great commentary on this board every single day.

Well, I was comparing other people to Anthony Bourdain, so......

According to google there are 47 million more people now than in '99 here in the states. More people, more suicides.
Humans have evolved to the point where we now can control when we die. It’s a healthy thing emotionally. Still fricked up when it’s a young person and especially when it is a parent who has others depending on them but a person who has ran all of the race they wish to run and who has no responsibility for anyone else? frick them....if they want to end it good for them and god speed, so to speak. It is amazing how stone aged we are on this subject.

that created tools that benefited off the cultural shift that Bourdain had a huge part in
you're being disingenuous

Holy crap you live in a bubble!
Bourdain is just a gnat on the arse of societal integration. He was on the Travel Channel for God's sake. He only moved to CNN in '13, and attracted 300K viewers, that translates to 1 in 100,000!
So, just like Bourdain should have learned, life doesn't resolve around you and what you feel about things. Coming to grips with that might help you with your depression. Something AB should have come to grips with before now
I noticed you didn’t give me another name.

Might it have started having the opposite effect on Bourdain? It seems like maybe so.

You feel for famous people... on Twitter?? Are you serious? Ummmmmmm you know how to stop people from trolling you on Twitter??? GTFO Twitter. That’s how.
Yeah I do. I went to a retreat once when my life was in a world of shite. I’m not going to say who (I’ll rule out Trump) but someone on this list was there: Top 100 Twitter
Yeah they’re rich and famous, but there are some major fricking drawbacks to this. You how many times Justin Bieber is told to kill himself everyday? Do you know how many people have tried to sneak into Jennifer Lawrence’s place to try and have sex with her. Do you know how many people have told Gwyneth Paltrow that they want to kill her kids? That gets to you after a while. I and you don’t have to put up with that save for the occasional a-hole here.

No you don’t. And if you’re looking for the sanctimonious prick, walk into the bathroom and look in the mirror.

Good point. It could alienate you as well if you feel estranged from your own culture. Excellent point.

Or it could expose you to a lot of suffering that you don't see in the US. Each time I go to a third-world country I get more and more jaded to it. If you remain sensitive to it, it can definitely affect you.

I think ultimately we all need to be able to temper our longings. I long to do many of the things he did on his shows, and I try to do as much as I can within the confines of everything I've got now. However, the things I have and cherish (mainly my family) are the number one priority at the present time. I won't lie. The thought of getting to have new experiences and see new things is one of the things that helps me when I struggle in the daily grind (the 'One Day' idea). I could see, however, if I opted to give up what I cherish (my wife, my kids) to constantly chase the 'One Day' new experience every day, I'd likely hit a wall of meaningless to it all and wonder what I ultimately had to look forward to, and what I am doing.
I'll content myself to the mostly mundane for now, with the occasional toe dip into the other, and the continued striving to maybe get there at some point when I've done the things I've committed to do here in the mundane. I hope.
