It was an ensemble cast and the actor/actress closest to a “star” at the time was Liv Tyler. She got a couple million, but none of the other main actors were anything other than B and C list character actors, if that.

They can be thankful that LOTR turned them into stars

They should’ve negotiated for residuals but they didn’t, that’s on them and their agents.

Don't you talk bad about Encino Man like that!

As for pay, let's say some people got $200k. That's ~$365k today. I'd also assume they had a lot of their living expenses covered for those three years. The hobbit actors were in their late 20's. You give me $120k/year and cover my living expenses at that age, and I'm fricking living like a king.

I'm ignoring Blanchett. Her part was small at something like10-15 minutes of screen time over a 10+ hour trilogy. She can shut up about it.

This is such an odd take. In no universe was Liv Tyler ever an A List star. If Ian McKellen is B List, Tyler would be a C at best. Though she did have that one title role in Jersey Girl.

At the time of filming (1999) I couldn’t argue against most average movie audiences probably recognizing Tyler or Ian.

She was a supporting actor in arguably the biggest movie of 1998 worldwide.

People absolutely knew who Tyler was as an actress in 1999.

So who made all the money? Peter Jackson? Who else?

The footnote to the story is that Sean Connery supposedly turned down the Gandalf role and a notable percentage of the profits.

Which probably ranks second in missed financial windfalls to only Matt Damon - for turning down the same type of offer for Avatar

Virtually all the main actors got a bump they otherwise wouldn't have had. So they can't complain.

I think the only one of the Hobbits I didn't see much of was Billy Boyd ( Pippin)

They originally wanted Sean Connery to play Gandalf, offering $30 milllion + 15% of the box office gross. He turned it down. A $450 million mistake.

In 2001, she might have been the most recognizable star in the whole cast. She was just three years removed from Armageddon - the highest-grossing film of 1998.

In the books, she was described as "the most beautiful creature in all creation" or something like that. Whatever she got, it was TOO much.

Typical greedy Hollywood woman.

They all did the casting couch, got famous and then decided to cry.

He famously passed on LOTR because he didn't understand the source material, but it's success (and the massive payday he missed out on) directly led to him staring in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen; a project he hated so much (both the experience of filming it and the final product) that he said "frick this" and retired. Quite the swing in outcomes there.

If the film lost money she still gets paid. She has zero risk in this transaction and her compensation reflected that.

Royalties should be taxed at 50%.
