I've been seeing critics online reacting to this with complete bafflement.

This is tied with a lot of other films, including Oppenheimer, for 2nd most Oscar Noms in history.

...and the film has extremely mixed reviews. A lot of critics have openly talked about how bad they think the film is and openly mocking the Academy.

Some are posting scenes like below that show just how bad this film actually is:

This is far from the only one, I've seen an avalanche of them all saying "What?" That level of nomination from the Academy has to be overtly political right?

At least we know why Netflix is raising their prices. 13 nominations can’t be cheap.

It’s pretty clear why it got 13 nominations.

It’s a confusing political stance to take. It has unanimously offended both trans and Mexican people. I’ve seen critics of every political persuasion rail against this movie. The people complaining about the trans woman in the actress category are getting drowned out by people complaining she was even nominated.

Even the Zoe Saldaña nomination is controversial. It is not completely undeserved, but she is clearly the Lead Actress and is listed as Supporting.

I watched the movie because I watch all the Best Picture nominees. As much as I advocate giving a movie a chance before critiquing it, I cannot in good conscience recommend anybody waste their time watching it. It’s so bad it’s not even entertaining to make fun of it, with the exception being the scene in the OP. All the rest of the songs are in Spanish.

They’re rewarding wokeness and inclusivity

Sending a message that if you make films like this, they will be rewarded irregardless if the movie is good or not

There zero mystery as to why it got all the nominations

Hollywood continuing to destroy themselves with zero self-awareness

I miss the days when I’d schedule to watch every single best picture nomination before the ceremony, feels like a lifetime ago

I have a fair amount of progressive, movie going friends.

Literally no one I know likes this movie. Most of them haven't even seen the movie and the ones that have are baffled. Even in the past, when they have had some more overtly political nominations I knew people who at least somewhat liked those movies.

It’s not confusing at all. The Oscars are run by a bunch of Woke morons. Oppenheimer just got in there because it was an undeniable masterpiece that people will be watching a century from now, but that’s now the exception and not the rule.

The sickest of the most perverted run that shite. Her nomination was an anti-Trump squeal of wriggling discontent.

As one of these “woke morons” per another poster , I think this kind of backlash will hurt its chances when final voting comes around. To me it’s - The Brutalist or Conclave as the winner (I find Conclave highly overrated)

What people forget is the Academy’s international membership. I would say a third is international based and will carry associated biases.

I love me some Zoe Saldana and consider myself liberal with certains things but this movie was just not good, maybe if it wasn't a musical it would have been better, but not my cup of tea

Will this top Crash as the worst winner ever? I know some folks thing Shakespeare in Love was the worst ever but Shakespeare was a good movie. It just wasn't the best movie. Crash was 100% racial huckster contrived trash.

It’s not going to win …
The Brutalist appeals to both US and European members. It’s the favorite.

The open backlash will sway the voting, which doesn’t even happen for another month or so.

There's nothing baffling about it. Everyone knows why it was nominated so much. It's the Academys clumsy attempt to virtue signal how much they support the trans crowd.

What in the actual frick? I just read the synopsis as I’d never heard of this one.

A feared cartel leader Juan “Little Hands” wants to fake his death to live her true authentic life.

I mean just the little hands name makes me

I assure you there was no member wide memo instructing us to push an agenda, but it isn’t a great look that it garnered the most nominations.

“Hollywood” is an international game … there are more films shooting in Budapest than L.A. at the moment. There are more international filmmakers than ever before, so of course the landscaping is changing.

But there will still be blockbusters, still be art house films and tons of good TV series to fill all of your streaming and theater needs. You don’t have to watch any or all of them.

I don't remember a year I last watched the Oscars, but I do remember the year Denzel won and it was made a big deal because of race, but even he was saying he didn't deserve the award based on color, instead praising all the other nominees that didn't get the award.
