She was probably my favorite character on that show. She could give as good as she got for sure. RIP to her

Very sad. Too young.

A case could be made that she was the best/funniest precocious child character on any sitcom.

Dee was such a bitch, always jumping up Roger's arse for something or other.

I think it's probably the most likeable all around cast I can recall. It was a fun show. Dee was hilarious. They all were as funny as Mama was sweet.

The original airing was a little before my time, but its syndicated reruns are a core memory of my childhood. After every LSU home football game in the 80's my dad and I would leave the stadium and stop at McDonald's to pick up a late dinner on the way home (He got aggravated if I wanted something at the concession stand during the game because I distracted him from watching the game ). We would generally get home around 10:30 - 11:00 where I would eat and watch "What's Happening", which came on after the 10:00 news. Then Soul Train came on after What's Happening, followed by what always seemed like one of the "Death Wish" movies with Charles Bronson.

How I still grew up as a white dude with no rhythm after watching What's Happening and Soul Train every Saturday in the fall I guess proves nature over nurture. But What's Happening will always be one of my favorite, if a little obscure, memories of being a kid.

She went on to become a Veterinarian of all things.

Good on her for not falling into the same footsteps as a lot of other child actors.

God bless her. Now I'll have this song in my head all day.

Growing up in the country, shows like What’s Happening, Jefferson’s, and Good Times, etc were literally how I learned about black people.
