Goonies Vs Stand By Me... Who Wins?

80's movies were pretty special . I can't begin to count the endless classics, so I'll zero in on two. I chose The Goonies and Stand By Me. I chose these two because I feel like they are probably the best and similar type movie. So share which movie is better in your opinion and then feel free to share stories related to your pick. So which one here wins?

Tough choice. Younger me would have immediately chosen The Goonies. They are similar but different in important ways. Stand By Me is a bit darker, more emotional and true to life. I’ll go with it.

Love both, but still go with goonies. Andy TYFYS!
Stand by Me does have the better soundtrack though.

I liked Goonies ok when I was a kid, but liked Stand By Me better.

Both are great...but the Goonies!

My friend and I had this debate a few years ago. I went with Goonies, but he argued his point and I’m a big enough man to admit I was wrong. Growing up in the 80s in rural Louisiana was not all that different from what is portrayed onscreen in Stand By Me. We absolutely rode our bikes down dirt roads to go deep into the woods and find grand adventure. Stopped at old stores for supplies (usually candy, sodas, baseball cards, the essentials). Found old, abandoned houses, cars and the like. Ended up at new locations we’d never seen. Dealt with bullies. Called each other **** and retards. Everything in that movie. Obviously to a much lesser degree.

Goonies is a great 80s kid adventure but Stand By Me is soooo much deeper coming of age movie.

I think Stand By Me is the better movie, but the Goonies is more fun.

For me it's without a doubt Stand by Me.

Stand By Me only because it’s probably my favorite movie ever.

They're both kid buddy movies, but they are also completely different. Like comparing The Unforgiven to The Three Amigos or Dune to The Fifth Element.
I'll take The Goonies though.

The Goonies and Back to the Future took place on the same day. Saturday October 26, 1985

For me it’s Stand by me, it was darker but more relatable, while Goonies is for the imagination.

This is the right answer I think. SBM is better and deeper in terms of the coming of age aspect. But Goonies just hits the adventure button so damn well.
You can’t go wrong with either one. I do prefer to rewatch the Goonies though. Like you said, it’s just more fun.

I love both but IMO Stand by Me is the best coming of age movie in the last 40 years. It also has the best closing line which rings so true, “I never had friends again like the ones I had when I was 12, heck have any of us.”

Which movie most experiences theatrical revivals year after year, is most likely to be found on tv and streaming apps on a given day, and is beloved by multiple generations?
Your answer is The Goonies.

"You guys wanna see a dead body?"

I never got the appeal for Goonies.
I guess I wasn't the target age group.
Stand By Me

Conan O’Brien says the same thing. He says he’s about ten years too old for it, but to younger Gen Xers, it’s like their Citizen Kane.
I don’t know, but if you grew up in the 80s, it’s a classic.
