He explains to Rose he worked on a squid boat in Monterey. Then, went down to the Los Angeles to the pier in Santa Monica and started doin portraits there for 10 cents a piece.
He also briefly stated he enjoyed ice fishing as a kid on lake Wissota in Wisconsin.
Where/how in his storyline does he cross the pond?

The Chippewa Falls Dawsons were secretly rich and Jack was just pretending to be poor for the likes.

Jack was a stowaway on a cargo vessel leaving out of Virginia to Barcelona. Got discovered by a boilermaker who worked in engine room that was under manned, so the boilermaker made him a cot in the engine room and insured he was fed in exchange for labor. Jack never saw the sun during the entire journey from Virginia to Spain.
He left that ship 15 lb lighter than when he snuck onboard in between two crates of ginned Cotton. He was also somewhat ill. He wandered the docks for a couple of days beginning to regret the trip, when fortune smiled upon him. A farmer had come into town to pay taxes to the port authority for recent shipments. On this day his wife decided to come along. While her husband was conducting business in the tax assessor's office a lowlife who preyed around the docks accosted the farmer's wife, trying to steal her small purse. Her screams caught the attention of Jack who had been sleeping in the adjacent alleyway. Jack sprang up to her defense and the thug ran off. Grateful for his action, the farmer and wife took Jack back to their farm where he stayed for 3 months, doing odd jobs and getting back to health. Once he was back to health, Jack thanked his friends and commenced his journey into Europe

It's clear from the very early stages of the movie that Jack is a compulsive liar and likely a narcissist. It would not surprise me if he realized how much baggage Rose had, and decided to fake his own death.

Got some other rich slut to pay for it

Plenty of room on that door for him

Is this the worst ending in all of movie history?

Saw recently that it wasn’t a door, it was a piece of the archway on a door near the main stair landing

That doesn't look like the same doorway arch to me

In the first class dinner scene he's asked that very question by Rose's mother. He said that he worked on tramp steamers.
