In depth interview with GRRM has people thinking Winds of Winter will never be finished

“I don’t know,” Martin says. “I think I’ll stay home. I have to write more Dunk and Egg. There’s supposed to be another Fire and Blood book, too. I do think if I can just get some of these other things off my back, I could finish The Winds of Winter pretty soon. It’s been made clear to me that Winds is the priority, but … I don’t know. Sometimes I’m not in the mood for that.”
Martin says he has around 1,100 manuscript pages finished. He’s also said the number for a while. He long has blamed the endless distractions that have come from shifting from a full-time author to a producer and celebrity. The success of Thrones was both the best thing that could have happened to Martin and the worst thing that could have happened to the greatest story he ever wrote.
Here’s what happens when he sits down to write: “I will open the last chapter I was working on and I’ll say, ‘Oh frick, this is not very good.’ And I’ll go in and I’ll rewrite it. Or I’ll decide, ‘This Tyrion chapter is not coming along, let me write a Jon Snow chapter.’ If I’m not interrupted though, what happens — at least in the past — is sooner or later, I do get into it.”

Martin supported the idea of ??the Jon Snow spin-off because it would be the safest way to continue Game of Thrones without revealing the fate of other characters, since Jon lives in exile Beyond the Wall.
Kit Harington wanted the spin-off series to show Jon with PSTD. Jon would send Ghost away, throw Longclaw away, and spend his time building and burning huts. The series would end with Jon dying. HBO thought this idea was too pessimistic and shelved the project.
HBO is currently developing an Arya Stark spin-off series set in Essos.
Martin describes his current relationship with Ryan Condal as "abysmal."

It should’ve been obvious for a long time time now he’s never finishing those books

He’s so full of shite. So Winds of Winter is the priority, but he has to do everything else first? Okay.
Look, dude… everyone has lost faith in you as far as finishing the series is concerned. You have our permission to walk away. Once you’re dead, someone less talented will finish it for you and no one will really care if it was you or not.

One point for HBO

If there’s anything consistent with GRRM is that he’s the perpetual victim, blaming everyone else for “ruining” his content.
This quote right here is why everyone loathes him. Of course WoW should be the priority! This motherfricker has just absolutely lost the plot.
And this is why I can’t tolerate his bitching that every show runner who gets hands on Westeros-based content is “ruining” things and he feels excluded. He MADE damn sure he wasn’t available so he could have someone to blame if it wasn’t perfect.
And so it continues. And when Dunk and Egg’s show gets passed what he’s written, he’ll balk and cry that he was robbed of creative control or the showrunners took over. Rinse and repeat.

But he still hasn’t written an episode of TV since season four of Thrones. “There has always been the possibility of me writing on the show,” he says. “But then things happen and suddenly I have other priorities.”

There is, however, one potential problem for the show’s future. “The big issue is that I have only written three novellas, and I have a lot more stories about Dunk and Egg in my fricking head,” Martin says, looking a bit shamefaced. “I’ve got to get them down on paper. I began writing two at various points in the past year. One is set in Winterfell and one set in the Riverlands …”
And so it continues. And when Dunk and Egg’s show gets passed what he’s written, he’ll balk and cry that he was robbed of creative control or the showrunners took over. Rinse and repeat.

I don’t know why people keep talking to
Him.
Everyone knows he’s not gonna finish it and has no interest in doing so
It just gets some shameless clicks and gets the fans riled up for a day or two

Damn shame that the wealth and fame proceeded the completion of the series. Because the fame ruined his focus.
He's essentially regressed from a driven and talented writer to a petulant child with no discipline and no one he's forced to listen to (for editing). In terms of his creative process the success destroyed his excellence

It’s shitty that we can’t get a ghostwriter to finish it or just hire Joe Abercrombie

Hey ChatGPT
Analyze the following books
A Game of Thrones
A Clash of Kings
A Storm of Swords
A Feast for Crows
A Dance with Dragons
Write a 300,000 word sequel that aligns with these books, yet leave it open ended. Call it The Winds of Winter.
Write a final book of roughly 400,000 words called A Dream of Spring wrapping up a the previous 6 books.
Of course chatgpt is nerfed in our public form to write 700,000 words, but it can be done.
Here is your outline
THE WINDS OF WINTER — COMPLETE STRUCTURAL OUTLINE
Tone: Dark, brutal, accelerating
Function: Collapse of old orders; rise of final players
Ending State: Westeros politically shattered, existential threat undeniable
STRUCTURE OVERVIEW
~65–70 chapters
POV-driven
Three converging fronts:
The North / The Wall
King’s Landing / Aegon’s invasion
Essos ? Westeros (Daenerys)
ACT I — DEATH AND BETRAYAL
The Wall & The North
Jon Snow
Jon is resurrected through Melisandre + warging into Ghost
Resurrection costs him:
Less warmth
More wolf instincts
Emotional distance
Jon abandons neutrality entirely
Declares war on the Boltons
Melisandre
Begins doubting R’hllor
Sees Bran more clearly than Jon in visions
Davos
Finds Rickon on Skagos
Learns the North wants a Stark symbol more than a king
Theon
Escapes Winterfell during chaos
Knows its weaknesses
King’s Landing
Cersei
Publicly humiliated
Loses grip on power
Makes desperate alliances (possibly with Euron or wildfire caches)
Jaime
Returns changed
Breaks with Cersei emotionally
Begins a quiet redemption arc
Aegon VI
Takes Storm’s End
Wins support as a reasonable alternative
Essos
Daenerys
Escapes the Dothraki by dominating them, not freeing them
Accepts that peace is impossible
Decides to invade Westeros with fire
Tyrion
Becomes her chief political advisor
Sees in her the same flaws as Tywin
ACT II — THE FALL OF FALSE KINGS
The North
Battle of the Bastards
Not heroic
Slaughter, mud, betrayal
Ramsay dies brutally
Winterfell reclaimed
Jon
Named King in the North
Secret about his parentage begins to surface
King’s Landing
Aegon
Marches toward the capital
Wins hearts by restoring order
Cersei
Triggers wildfire explosions
King’s Landing partially destroyed
Tommen dies (accident or suicide)
Jaime
Fails to stop Cersei
Watches the city burn again
The Iron Islands & Dorne
Euron
Reveals true ambitions: godhood, not kingship
Uses blood magic and dragon-binding horns
Dorne
Aligns with Aegon
Revenge against Lannisters finally begins
ACT III — THE LONG NIGHT BEGINS
The Wall Falls
Not destroyed by armies, but by magic
Bran’s visions reveal:
The Wall is a spell
It requires sacrifice
It breaks
The Others Advance
Not mindless
Cold, deliberate, ancient
Raise entire towns
Ending of The Winds of Winter
Snow falls in King’s Landing
Daenerys lands in Westeros
The dead march south
No one is ready

As for spinoffs, Id like to see Aegon conquering the seven kingdoms with Balerion. Roberts rebellion could be good, as well, but I couldnt careless about an Arya spinoff. I was excited for the Jon Snow spinoff, but if what was said above is true, I'm glad it didn't get made.
