It was the novelty of it at the time. Low budget and black and white. And like me, I feel a lot of the people who discovered clerks came to it after being blown away by mallrats.
Plus, if you ever worked customer service anywhere, it hits close to home big time. Randall was everyone's hero. Also, super quotable movie.
"37! My girlfriend sucked 37 dicks!"
"In a row?"

Also with clerks, some pretty "memorable" moments.
-Chewing gum salesman using a cancerous chunk of lung to convince people to quit smoking and buy more gum.
-Learning what "snowballing"was.
-Slutty ex screwing a dead guy in the bathroom.
-Randall knocking over the coffin at a funeral.
-Hockey on the roof.
-Introduction of Jay and Silent Bob.
-Original alternate ending of the two of them getting shot during a robbery.
-"I'm not even supposed to be here today."

Brody being appalled by the third nipple was pretty good.

Scary stuff.
I do like his early stuff, though I'd be hard-pressed to call it great filmmaking. He wrote good dialogue and had a blast with his friends creating stuff, but even he would admit that he wasn't that gifted with the camera and relied heavily on the two-shot.
Tusk had good ideas poorly executed, but I'm a sucker for the interesting failure. Red State had good ideas that they couldn't afford or Smith isn't a good enough visual stylist to pull off. But it worked for the first hour or so.
But I'll always have a soft spot for the Jersey films.

I thought Red State was pretty good. Could have been better, but still good.
I wish he would have gone with the alternative ending in Red State and the horns they heard really had been the Rapture.

Funny how everytime someone has a heart attack it was "the widow maker" that was clogged.
For me it was the RCA ... Right Coronary Artery and mine was 95% clogged. It took three stints to open it back up, and two more in another area ... that time. Three months later I had two more inserted for a total of seven and the first time around I barely missed having my chest split open, they were on the last try.
All this "widow maker" stuff though ... lol. And had he had a "massive" heart attack his heart would have stopped.
If your heart stops ... you're dead, period. Married or not. You're a fat dead over-eating slob frick Kevin, and the last few minutes of your life hurt like a bitch.

Respectfully, I don't think this is right - I think Dante gets killed by a robber, but Randall is implicitly already gone or still at the video store at that point.

This. Buddy of mine died at 37 a month ago from a heart attack. Was not a big dude at all and still was pretty active. He just had another kid too. Heart disease sucks and after you turn 35 you should have regular check ups and make sure you take meds if you have high BP

Not a great movie by any means, but you are correct. That ending chilled me to the core. Ill never get that image out of my mind.

This. Yes, being overweight increases your risk. Losing weight decreases your risk. But if you don't get checked out regularly you're taking a huge chance. I went from, "For a guy your size your blood pressure is really good" to "you're in danger of a heart attack or stroke" in a couple of doctor's visits. Don't be that guy that thinks that he's too fit to have heart trouble or that guy who gets back in shape and thinks he's good to go... and then has a heart attack.

That is the best avatar I’ve ever seen. Teddy Redbones needs an ongoing series.

Perhaps. I've only ever seen it once.

I wish he was cast in more films.
In person, he's entertaining as hell. If you have a chance to see him perform live, go.
I agree. Loved that series of question, and answer. shows he did at colleges. Caught that on cable, and loved it.
My take on heart checkups:
Used to walk as much as I could for the exercise. I had some chest pains about halfway home, during a three mile round trip walk to the grocery store in July of 2010, and was nauseated when I got home. I was 51 at the time. I felt fine afterwards, so I did nothing.
After the Tennessee at LSU game on October 2nd, I had chest pains again. Went to bed thinking LSU lost that game because I turned the TV off when T-Bob Herbert snapped the ball, on what I thought was the last play. Yea, I was mad, and let a ballgame almost kill me. I relaxed, and got to sleep. Felt fine all day Sunday. Went in to work Monday, and started having pains again. When I left the office I told my boss I was feeling bad, and going to the doctor the next day.
My doctor did an EKG, and sent me to the emergency room. I was admitted to the hospital, and Wednesday morning they did a heart cath. I had blockage in four arteries. Had a quadruple bypass on Friday, October 8th. on October 14th, they told me I could go home the next day.
When I woke up the next day my leg felt stiff. When I put weight on it, it started swelling. I had a blood clot. The clot caused compartment syndrome, and they had to do emergency fasciotomy surgery on my leg. I don't remember much between then and the week of Thanksgiving. Was on life support for a couple of weeks and had to start dialysis, when my kidneys quit working.
Not long after I woke up, the kidneys started back working. Thank goodness, I don't really remember much of that time. Really just remember a few times where I knew I was away from my room, and wanted to go back. Remember hospital employees being dressed up for Halloween too. Very clearly remember them taking me in, and out, of surgery to remove the dialysis port. I got out of the hospital, and two weeks of rehab on January 6th, 2011. Left using a walker.
I have had nerve, and vascular problems with my left leg ever since. My foot dropped while I was laid up, so I have to wear a brace on the leg. Have had a total of four stents put in the that help some with the pain. Take meds to help too. I was diagnosed with epilepsy at 12, and Lupus at 34, so I had some health problems all along. The doctors think the Lupus caused the clot.
If you get regular checkups, and go to the doctor the first time you feel any pain, or tightness, you probably will fare better than I did.
