Came across a reel the other day with some guy explaining how it is pretty much a loose retelling of Terminator 2- Judgement Day

-- Leo diCaprio character is like Sarah Connor/Linda Hamilton- parent from a fringe radical group

-- The black daughter Willa (Chase Infiniti) is like John Connor/Ed Furlong

-- Sean Penn is like the shapeshifting "new" Terminator T-1000.

-- Benicio Del Toro is a form of the protective Arnold Schwarzenegger /Terminator, protecting the kid.

Apparently he is not the only one who thinks so:

"One Battle After Another" Review
"One Rave After Another"

Others have pointed to an interview where Paul Thomas Andeson talked about his first day of film school, when a screenwriting professor told the class “if you’re here to write Terminator 2, just leave now.” And Anderson did do so, the next day.

Finally got a chance to watch this, everything with Leo was great, particularly with Leo and Benecio, who were both hilarious.

Surprised Perfidia got as much acclaim as she did, given her limited screen time, although her character’s presence is obviously felt throughout. Thought Deandra was just as impressive if not mire.

Willa was very very good, not sure how much that actress has done before this but she has a bright future for sure.

The Penn role was over the top, far too much time given to such a cartoonish character in a film filled with mostly interesting complex characters.

Fantastic chase scenes throughout, first the bank getaway, then Leo on the rooftops , and finally the chase through the desert

Most satisfying part to me was all time great protector Unkas from Last of the Mohicans rising from the grave to give another similarly understated and selfless performance 30 years later

Plus I hate Sean Penn

I hate him as well. I have always refused to watch anything he was in. For the longest time the only thing I had ever seen him in was Fast Times and only because I saw it before he or I were that interested in politics or what was going on in the world.

Then for some reason about a year ago, I watched Mystic River. As much as I hate to say it, Sean Penn is a hell of an actor. I have actually gone back and watched several of his movies specifically to see his acting. I still think he is one of the biggest idiots on the planet, but there is no denying his acting talents.

Sure, but supporting the Chavez regime is a tad little bit different than "both siding."

About 20 min in is all I could take. Glorifying left wing nut jobs just isn’t my cup of tea.

I agree.

I thought it was awful. I don't understand PTA's obsession with Pynchon because he obviously doesn't get him. It's like if Tarantino started making movies based on DH Lawrence books or something.

OBAA bulldozed a lot of the nuance of the book, which is more about how the next generation can't truly understand that of their parents and how society moves on even if individuals can't.

The one thing that stood out to me about the movie is that this is supposed to be a leftist put down of fascism yet it uses immigration raids as props. There aren't any illegal immigrant characters. We don't get to know them, it's just kept in the background. That seems exploitative to me considering the intent.

Plus the Christmas cult was so painfully heavy handed, Pynchon would have never written anything like that. And for some reason the end of the movie turned into a Breaking Bad episode.

PTA's adaptation of Inherent Vice was excellent. It was pretty true to the book and Joaquin was amazing as Doc Sportello. I've not read Vineland but from watching the movie I would think it was poorly adapted. I doubt any of the interracial love triangle nonsense was in the book.

I hope you watched At Close Range, Bad Boys, and Carlito's Way. Those and Fast Times are my favorite movies of his.
