This guy is a lot more Reacher than Tom Cruise ever thought of being
I thought Cruise was more likable and believable, but I mean, it’s Tom Cruise. Best movie star of the last 40 years IMO.
He obviously is too short, but I hadn’t read the books at that time.
If I had to complain, I’d say this version of Reacher was too jacked. You don’t carry a change of clothes but you work out three times a day and take steroids?
Okayyy
Enjoyable overall, and I’m glad they’re making this show.
Thought Finlay was portrayed very well.
That actress playing Roscoe is the shite.

I understand suspension of disbelief, but it’s just silly to have Reacher show up in a random, rural town just hours after his estranged brother is killed with such a flimsy, unrelated explanation.
It wasn’t a random town. Joe told Jack about the town Joe was working a case in. Did he do it because he knew he might die and wanted Reacher to find out about it? Did he do it because it was an interesting fact about the town he was working in?
It’s not unbelievable that Reacher would visit the town. He’s just roaming the country and was nearby. The timing was convenient but can’t we assume that Joe told him about Margrave very recently as the investigation was heating up?

I think this started stronger than it finished, it got pretty hokey toward the end.
I agree with this, having a "boss" character for each main character was a bit much. Reacher's bad arse fight was with a small fry. Only thing that made that remotely believable is that he had a crowbar.

Just finished binging this the last 2 days.
From someone who hasnt read any of the Reacher novels, I enjoyed it.
My only complaint would be how much difficulty Reacher had in fighting Kliner’s meth head looking nephew
Just finished so going through the thread.
Yeah this was really annoying to me. The series is a great adaptation except for that scene pretty much. The cousin isn’t even a character in the book and is so damn hate-able on screen, I wanted Reacher to pummel that little frick to a pulp.
SPOILERS
In the book, it’s the Kliner kid in that scene, which is fine because he’s built up as a badass too, so Reacher having some trouble with him isn’t as far fetched.
Also he dies there so he doesn’t end up killing his dad in the book, and Reacher gets him at the end in the warehouse instead.
Other than that they really did do a great job adapting the story.
One small detail that they left out that I always thought was pretty cool was the Blind Blake story.
In the book, the barber’s sister, who we hear about in the series but don’t meet, has a scene where she and Reacher are talking. Turns out, she was friends with and the only witness to Blake’s murder. She tells a story of a young boy and his rich father walking on the sidewalk and Blake, being blind, didn’t see them and give them room to pass, and bumps into the kid, who cries for his dad to teach him a lesson.
The father beats Blake to death with his cane, that had a huge diamond stud on the handle.
So the Mayor was the shitty little kid that caused Blake’s death all those decades ago, and ended up being what brought Reacher to the town.
Thought it was a pretty good way to go full circle and give more meaning to the Blake story and make the mayor even more of a monster.
Looking forward to see which book they do for S2.

So not sure if the character was in the first book or not, but she is definitely in the Reacher book universe
She isn’t, her first appearance is book 5 or 6, the one where Reacher is hired to figure out how someone is going to assassinate the VP so he calls her in to help.
She’s a good character and again the series nailed the character imo.
Not bad to bring her in as she’ll probably be the only recurring character in the series.

One thing that’s bugging me is the Sherlock Holmes bits like telling Finley he’s a Harvard man divorced and recently stopped smoking. He doesn’t do that in the books and it’s out of character for Reacher. That said he does a decent job on the investigative ability piece.
That is exactly what Reacher does in the books.
He’s former MP, basically the best detective there is, and is constantly making deductions based on small observations like that.
It’s kind of his whole m.o.
This reminds me, I went back and flipped through some bookmarks to make sure there wasn’t a cousin character in book 1, and saw that Reacher is constantly referred to as being “huge, 6’5 220”
It isn’t until several books later that he starts saying he’s 6’5 250. I had forgotten that
It’s a funny view of what is and isn’t “huge”. Child was showing his 70s/80s Brit sensibilities there

I thought Jack hadn't talked to Joe in several (five?) years and had no idea where he was. If that's true then I wouldn't think Joe had been working that area for over 5 years.
This part was always a stretch but in the end was just a big coincidence. A weird sort of thing that inspires a mystery book. It just so happened there were another 20+ stories after that one.

In The Affair that was written long after Killing Floor, Reacher tries to call his brother just as he is leaving the Army. Joe isn’t there but his secretary tells Reacher that Joe is in Margrave Ga working a case.
There are a few holes in the plot of the series and the took some liberties (like including Neagley as a character) but overall I thought it was well done.

Could’ve let Titties McButt ride his face in the air conditioning for a little longer, but decided he needed to walk his arse deeper into nowhere, GA with the clothes on his back.

Pretty sure Reacher said that he randomly heard a Blind Blake song on the radio, and that's what made him go to Margrave. First thought was that was BS, but as mentioned he said he hadn't talked to his brother in years. So basically all of that was one big coincidence.

Yeah I think that was book three or four, when he hooks up with the General’s daughter.
It was a good explanation for the update, I just thought it was funny that for the first few books he was referring to a 6’5 220 guy as “huge” that struck fear into everyone that saw him. And kept saying it over and over in the books “I’m a really big guy, 6’5 220”
The 2000s hit and his American publisher was like this guy couldn’t even play American football, Lee

Yeah I think his height jumped around an inch or two between books too. I only read the first 5 or so.

Watching the series right now, Richtson far more looks the part but is a bit stiff at times.

Yes. He won't be in Margrave.
If they stay consistent with the books, he will find another piece of tail in his next town.

3/4 of the way through the first book and I have to say the differences are really minor. The only major difference is Baker is portrayed as incompetent in the show, but in the book Reacher considers him very competent and intelligent. Reacher and Roscoe get together a lot more. Finley in the show is much younger than in the book.

Reacher is 6'5" and about 230 in the first book. That is a big dude.
