It came along before story arc tv was much of a thing so it's groundbreaking for that alone. Special effects are definitely dated. And I've never seen a show with such a gap between the good acting and the bad. Londo and G'Kar are played brilliantly, a few others are very good, but there's a lot of very bad acting mixed in. I always wondered if Boxleitner was trying to overact as some kind of tribute to Shatner.

Yes

He has his moments on both ends of the acting spectrum. Sometimes really solid and convincing, other times, ehhhhhh.

Great show, but be aware the effects have definitely aged.

Quality drops after Season 4, but still worth watching.

It is similar to DS9 though. A lot of parallels.

Yeah, S5 is probably better skipped altogether. The S4 finale is a very satisfactory end.

absolutely, its great

Is it basically just deep space 9 all over again?

not even close, its a fresh new space series unlike the others before it

the more you watch the more interesting it gets because you cant guess whats coming next

the series is addictive, and there were i think there were around 5 or 6 movies done about it as well that are great

I read that the whole thing was already pre written which makes me all in.

They already knew how to start in and end it.

The creator went as far as writing a "trapdoor" for each character, which allowed them to have a backstory to be written out of the show without disrupting the main plot.

I had a crush on Claudia Christian as a young lad. It wasn't until years later that I found out she had done a ton of nudes.

Loved B5, way more than DS9. Worth a watch for sure. I wasn't a fan of the ranger spinoff series.

Show wouldn't be what it is without those two

No. It was pitched as a Star Trek series, originally. There are hard feelings (good chance Paramount ripped B5's creator off).

Yeah that shite was shady, DS9 exists solely because B5 was pitched as a Star Trek story and they were like no that won't work. Then turned around and made it without him. JMS gave Paramount and all the studios he presented the project to what he called a bible of information detailing the entire story arc. They really screwed him over with DS9 when they beat him to the punch and everyone thought B5 was the ripoff.

That's part of what I was talking about by saying issues with the studios. Even taking that into account, there are some good things about season 5, but it also has its weak points.

It's still worth watching, though. In a way, the weaker points and more one-off episodes of season 5 kind of mirror the buildup episodes in season 1. So you get the peak of the story closer to the middle of the series, but then it tails off into the aftermath which you don't get to see in a lot of stories.

It certainly does leave a bit of a "what if" feeling, though. Fans will always have to wonder how it would have been if some of the themes had been less rushed and able to play out all the way.

First four season is good, fifth season is straight up trash. You do best to just watch season 1-4 then skip to the last two episode of season 5. Literally nothing of significant happened in Season 5. Why? Cause it was all set up for potential spin off shows, all of which failed to get off the ground.

Season 1 special effects are tough. Great story. I am a huge fan of both DS9 and B5.

Seasons 2 to 4 are some of the best sf TV ever. There are lots of hints dropped in the early more episodic episodes too.

Walter Koenig plays a heavy, an officious and power hungry telepath.

I decided to rewatch B5. I had not seen it since the original run, and even then, I didn't see all the episodes and missed all of Season 5.

Finished Season 1 this weekend. Special effects are rough. You can tell they are trying to find their footing, but if you're paying attention, you can see they are laying the groundwork for some interesting story lines in later seasons. The season finale was good.

Started Season 2 yesterday. Episode 1 is pretty good. Episode 2 fricking slaps.

I didn't care for it when it aired. The aesthetics or something, it just felt too Buck Rogers in the 25th Century for me ( and no Erin Gray - Giggity)

Seems to have a solid following though, so maybe I'll give it a 2nd chance.

it would be a tall order to even be in the same discussion as Deep Space 9.

To be fair, the idea for DS9 was stolen from the creator of B5.

You really should. Overlook the dated effects and sometimes ham acting and accept them for what they are, and take a deep dive into the storyline. It's very good.

I personally enjoy Babylon 5 more than Deep Space 9. It's one of my favorite shows of all time. The long term story arc was better than other sci-fi, especially considering the series didn't have an existing "universe" to pull from and had to build the story from scratch. And although issues with various actors and studios created some issues, they did a decent job of fixing things without losing the entire story.

The episodes in the first season that feel more like episodic television are planting seeds that come back into play later on. Very few things don't ultimately pay off later. And the big reveal episodes have bigger payoffs. It's worth a watch, but you might not think so if you only watch the first season. You might not feel like it really gets moving until the second season, but commit to it and you'll hopefully enjoy it.

The CG effects won't look as good now, 30 years later (and some effects only have the 4:3 format remaining and can't truly be upscaled), but they were pretty impressive in the mid 90s. They filmed the show in 16:9 widescreen before that was a thing for normal broadcasts.

Some people don't like some of the acting, which comes in part from using lots of stage actors as guest characters. For the most part, it gets better. The pilot does carry over into the main series, although there are a few changes and inconsistencies. And some people also don't like the acting of one of the main characters from the first season, but without spoiling anything, there was a real life reason for it. I wouldn't look it up until after watching at least the first three seasons to avoid spoiling anything about that character, though.

All that. Particularly the part about not judging from the first season. First season isn't bad, just meh.

After that the show really takes off.

First season sets the stage, provides the background. You get to know some of the basics, nothing deep but a lot of introducing.

Yes worth watching. As others have said, the cgi is bad by today's standards so just keep that in mind.

Definitely not DS9. While overall I like DS9 better, BSG has some stories/moments that even top it.

I keep hoping that they will release a restored blu ray version of BSG and DS9 like that they with TNG.
