Hopper was a bit over the top this season.
Yeah, he became very one-dimensional. Very different from the Hopper in Season 1.

I thought a lot of the comedy was forced, especially the Hop Joyce tension and everything Erica said.
One of the best things about S1 was the dialogue between the kids and how it just flowed. There was very little of that this season.

speaking of over the top...
despite those criticisms, I still thoroughly enjoyed this season
the theme of the group growing apart as they get older should hit home with almost everyone

Halfway through. Loving it so far. Can't wait to finish so I can read this thread.
Hopper is a tough SOB, but I do like how they show the aftereffects of someone really getting their arse kicked.

The kids have a great dynamic. They were not together as a whole group in a lot of this and it was noticeable for me as well. Erica's character was a bit overbearing. I think the young lady acted the part well as I believe that is what they wanted from her.

Over all, I give it a solid 8 out of 10. Season one is a 10, season two is a 7.5 for me.
Things I loved:
- all the 80's references that they nailed.
- Hopper learning how to parent
- Bob's legacy as the hero he was
- Steve, everything about his character
- the brutal inevitable reality of kids growing up, losing interest in kid's games, and the beginning of the road to adulthood. I felt bad for Will, I think I may have been that kid. Even though I liked girls, I was late to let go of my childhood. (My wife swears I never did)
- The conspiracy theory guy!
Things I wasn't crazy about:
- Erica was too much. Too smart, too "cute" with her wisecracking, too over the top
- the Russians were almost comic relief doofus. Except for the terminator guy they were all bumbling idiots from a bad Saturday morning cartoon
- The Dustin and Suzy song went on too long
And one huge plot hole that no one seems to have mentioned yet:
- The whole reason for writing Erica in to a major role was because Steve, Dustin, and Robin needed someone small enough to fit in the air ducts. Later on, Murray, a full grown adult, goes crawling through them with no problem.
Another slight plot hole that just irked me was that they needed to get to Dustin's HAM radio to have a strong enough signal to communicate with the underground team. In reality they may have had enough power to send, but there's no way the walkie talkies would be able to send a strong enough signal for them to receive.
Also, when Dustin referred to the hill where the HAM radio was as "Weathertop", my Tolkien nerd heart grew three sizes
Overall, I fun summer show to watch, but not as good as I think it could have been. But definitely not a hater.

The duct they needed Erica for was in scoops ahoy, to get to the other side of the mall. The ducts down in the Russian facility were bigger.

different ducts
those were the ducts that both Erica and Dustin used to get to the elevator from inside the underground compound
the ducts that Erica could only fit in were to get into the elevator from the mall

The end with Hopper reading the letter to the rendition of Heroes hit the feels in all the right ways
They used Heroes (pretty sure the same version) when Wills "body" was recovered at the quarry in S1. Turns out Will was not dead.
The song could be signaling that Hopper is still out there

It’s like they were straight from Goldeneye.
Loved the season.

The post credit scene basically confirmed. Why else would the Russian guard say "no, not the American"

I don't think the American is Hopper, more likely Brenner. My guess would be that Hopper went into the Gate and is in the Upside Down

Couple of casual fan questions:
So, probably unimportant but something I missed, who is Maxine's caregiver? I always assumed Billy was, didn't question it too much even though that's probably not legal but now that Billy is dead; is she just living alone? No one adopted her.
Also, why couldn't Hopper just come back to the room where Joyce was before she turned the key? Would've only taken a minute...did the door break or something?

her Dad?

the electricity (or whatever the current coming out of the machine) was blocking the path

Max and Billy are step siblings. Billy's dad remarried Max's mom. They are seen in Season 2.
Billy's dad is an abusive controlling a-hole. Hence, Billy becoming an abusive, controlling a-hole.

They clearly showed a huge electric field arcing between Hopper and the safe room. He was cut off.

I never stopped watching it. I thought it was good and better than season 2 although I enjoyed season 2 except for the additional episode.
S3 did feel rushed and they did have time to get everything right. I thought they nailed the changes in the kids perfectly. Probably should have used Suzie more to set up ending. The Robin character was great but there was no need to go the lesbian route at the end in a show like this and cracking the code took less than 5 minutes for her. It was not needed. Obviously the Russians found a way in to the Upside Down from their part of the world but could have had a little more back story on the whole Russian angle.
With all the time they had between season 2 and 3, they probably should have filmed a longer season 4 to end it. I think a 10/12 episode season 4 would be perfect to end it but they need to do it quick.
