Without McLovin nobody would remember Superbad. Overrated film.

Superbad. It would be closer if not for all the shitty American Pie sequels.

I'm still mad about what they did to Stiffler's character in American Wedding.

Does Superbad exist without American Pie (and to some extent, Road Trip)? American Pie reinvigorated the "R" high school comedy. The Apatow Troupe was just getting started with Freaks and Geeks in 1999-2000 when American Pie was released. Obviously the lines in Superbad are sharper 8 years after America Pie. Self-aware teenage hipster wasn't exactly a thing in 1999.

I prefer the American Pie films. Superbad is a bit overrated, IMO.

Superbad was more realistic.

Except for the whole McLovin storyline which was the best part of the film.

Superbad was more realistic. And a better film.

American Pie was more cinematic teen comedy hijinks.

American Pie was very 80's.

I was over 30 when American Pie came out. It was a funny movie. Nicely done. But I did not relate to it in any way at all.

I was 40 when Superbad came out. I related to those characters a lot more than those in American Pie.

I like Superbad and think it's a good film.......

But American Pie, not close for me. I was a high school senior 99-00, therefore, the exact target audience, saw it with my best friends, etc. Just perfect timing on that one.

And I think it's the more endearing film, and the characters are WAAAAYYY more likable in the long run. Superbad has the modern tilt towards jaded worldviews all over it. American Pie is more positive, more honest.

That jaded POV is more honest.

AP is certainly more postitive but I wouldn't call it a more honest view of the experience

Naaaa. I agree a jaded worldview is part of the modern condition, but that doesn't make it more honest. It actually makes it less, but that's a bigger discussion.

That's right with the "Darker/More Depressing is more 'real,'" such a terrible way to look at things.

Overall better film is superbad. The underlying theme of accepting growing up and and the reality of losing a good friend to another college is real. And as they portrayed, kinda gay (boop boop) .
There is also a more creative writing to it. And the cops absolutely make it a better movie.

But American pie does focus on the high school dance , losing virginity trope very well.

I laughed at Superbad, but couldn't really relate.

American Pie was much more relatable, I could assign all the characters to my friends from back in the day.

So when you were in High School you weren't a dork?

That's the big divide between these movies and liking them:

If you prefer:

Superbad - dork who couldn't fathom getting laid

American Pie - cool kid who planned on getting laid
