My hope is that with the success of The Last of Us and Fallout that we see some more of those stories adapted in a way that they can lead to successful TV series.
I would say both are certainly changing the perception of what video game adaptations can be. It’s kind of funny because they are completely different types of adaptations too. TLOU being a retelling of a very well-defined story, while Fallout is a new story being told in a very lore-rich world (albeit from the eyes of a vault-dweller, in the same way as the actual games).
Of the two, I think Fallout is way harder to pull off. But I think the fact that it has been successful really expands the realm of IP that can be theoretically adapted.

It’s like HotD with the names too. Malenia, Melina, Marika, Millicent, Miquella, Godwyn, Godfrey, Godrick, Godefroy. It’s like GRRM’s biggest contribution was making it confusing as frick to remember who’s who.
Don’t forgot Rykard, Radagon, Renalla, Rellana, Romina, Ranni.
Lots of GRRMs. I bet he thought that was clever. A nice break from not writing WoW.

Rykard, Radagon
It took me forever to figure out that Radahn and Radagon were different people.
And then there’s Margit and Morgott who I guess are the same person?

You are aware Ellie is supposed to be 13? Also weird double standard there since you don’t seem to have this problem with guys

A season long series of Red Dead Redemption 2 on HBO would (if done well) be an instant classic on par with Lonesome Dove.
Legit, one of the greatest Westerns of all time.

Simplistic beautiful games.
I have both on Xbox and iPhone and play them when I’m in a lull.

There’s another one in 2025.
Did you see the one in 2021? Their battle was the back story. Not “central” but a good focus.

Certain people who didn’t play the game got triggered by episode 3.

Yes that was a good film but I was thinking more of the 90s Mortal Kombat that was made where it was a little campy but me as a youngin' loved that movie.

Call me a misogynist, but I can't get into a show if the leading lady is absolutely awful to look at. Hopefully showrunners will do a better job at casting as they continue to adapt these video games for television.
Also, Lady Mormont ain’t taking none of that shite.

There is no excuse for a legend of Zelda epic not having been made by now.

Fallout is interesting because each game has its own story but it’s not set in stone.
So I think it gives the writers license to write within the world, and add what they want and viewers don’t feel ripped off because it isn’t a beat for beat recreation.

ive felt this way for years. i much rather sit down and play a game narrative than watch most of what movies/tv have to offer these days.

Horizon Zero Dawn is a really cool original story I would love to see be made into a big budget TV show. Believable female lead checks a box for Hollywood. It’s the best storyline I’ve personally ever experienced in a game.
netflix was developing something but i think thats been squashed. Netflix squashes or ruins anything good.

Yeah I guess one way you can look at it is that the writers’ task for Fallout is basically to write a new Fallout game, which is somewhat unique to the structure of Fallout. Maybe that does actually make it easier than trying to truly “adapt” an existing story.
The more I think about it, it’s not really the structure of the story that I think makes it a harder adaptation. It’s more figuring out how to get the aesthetic and lore to translate to live action without feeling overly goofy/campy. I mean you certainly can go all in on goofiness, but that’s a very fine line if you’re trying to make a “serious” show that requires some suspension of disbelief.
I think they did a fantastic job of capturing the absurdities and idiosyncrasies of the Fallout world while also keeping it grounded enough to maintain that suspension of disbelief. A lot of that comes down to great performances from Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins, but it also comes from good writing and overall production.
The added angle of Lucy, Maximus, and the ghoul representing different play styles/skill levels is also brilliant (if it was actually intentional).
I think TLOU is “easier” in the sense that it was basically ready-made for live action. You have a compelling story in a great environment, that folks have been screaming would make a great TV show/movie for several years. The keys in TLOU are mostly casting and getting the VFX/sets right. I’m still not 100% sold on Bella Ramsey as the right choice for Ellie, but I think they pretty much nailed the rest of it.
Still, out of the two, I think Fallout is a much more ambitious project.

Ironically, there are a shitload of “R” names as well.
I just recently finished playing it, and it’s pretty frustrating how the lore and story are so cryptic/obtuse. Especially because it actually is a good story with really cool lore, but it kind of takes you out of things when you constantly have to google wtf is going on because the game refuses to do any exposition.
