The Ted McGinley Award

Married with Children actually got better when he replaced Steve and the Darcy's became a more integral part of the Bundy dysfunction rather than just the contrasting yuppie couple next door.

Hated watching the new DARREN! Never seemed to gel with Samantha. He was so condescending. Can't even watch him in the reruns.??

Jerry’s dad Morty in Seinfeld. Originally played by Phil Burns, Barney Martin took over in season 2 and made Morty iconic

Did you know that the first episode with Frank Costanza was played by John Randolph, not Jerry Stiller? You never see this version of that episode b/c they went back and reshot with Stiller and that's what you see in syndication

When Michael Scott left and the British chick came in.

When Frank Underwood became the ex President and Clair took over.

That’s because Uncle Arthur was more his type.

The biggest ruined one for me is Spartacus. If you don’t know the details the main actor playing Spartacus (Andy Whitfield), died so they had to replace him. There was nothing they could do , but for me, it totally ruined what was an incredible show. Very sad situation all around

The problem was they cast someone who looked completely different and so always looked out of place. And the replacement never looked grizzled or tough. He didn’t have any muscle tone which on that show was jarring.

When Barney left TAGS , a GOAT level show became mediocre and forgettable.

Slightly off topic, but I think the bravest swap was Jon Lovitz stepping in to take the spot left open when Phil Hartman died. Even before there was a social media to explain it all, you could tell that Lovitz was there in an attempt to keep the show going for Hartman's friends and castmates.

As far as the Darrens go, I was too young to notice the change in chemistry when Samantha switched husband's. I just thought that York was much better doing spit-takes, double-takes, and general shock and outrage. Once it was in syndication and I was older, I got that the romance was gone from that marriage and it was more like a hetero sister with a closeted gay brother.

But as soon as they switched Darren's, my young mind thought that Dick Sargent was cast because Dick Sargent + Dick York - Dick X 2 = Sargent York.

When Dennis Weaver left Gunsmoke he was replaced with Ken Curtis.

I don' t think there was any drop off.

Same with the Gomer/Goober hand-off on The Andy Griffith Show.

I'm gonna go ahead and say The Witcher was ruined by recasting Henry Caville but it was barely watchable with him in it

Disagree. It was a huge change but the replacement held it together well enough to me.

The Ted McGinley Award

If you're referring to Married With Children, you can meet me at the nearest Sonic for a fistfight. Jefferson was awesome on MWC...much better than Steve (who I also liked though). And he was actually on it for twice as long as Steve as well.

Agree with most about Last Man Standing. The Mandy change was jarring and completely offputting. And the Kristen change after S1 was bad too, but didn't ruin the show necessarily. But the Mandy one was inexcusable. Just say she moved away and remove the character from the show.

the Aunt Viv change on Fresh Prince was also weird. But I do think the new Vivian was much better than the original. And I loved that they also made an in-episode joke about her being different too, so they leaned into it.

When Coy and Vance replaced Bo and Luke Duke....thank goodness they got their contracts worked out.

Whomever replaced Enos wasn't near the character that Enos was. Y'all remember Enos got his own spinoff out in L.A.? Lasted all of one season.

Just for you, Tori trying to fill the void left by Kelley and Jessie in Saved by the Bell almost ruined the show. I know there were contract shenanigans and it wasn't initially planned, but it was so jarring.

Also second the replacement of Naevia was a terrible downgrade.

The worst re-cast that I can think of is Donna Reid replacing Barbara Bel Geddes on Dallas. She was a great actress, just not Miss Ellie.

Also on that show, Coach (Nicholas Colasanto) who died in real life was replaced by Woody Harrelson. Didn't miss a beat.

Not only didn’t miss a beat but became one of the real stars of the show. Woody and Frasier were arguably the biggest stars by the end of the show and they weren’t original cast members.

Imo, Cheers was a much better show after Shelley Long left. Moving away from the “would they wouldn’t they” Sam and Diane main arc opened the show up to way better story lines.

Yeah, the second Daario had zero charisma
