I saw this movie so many times. Excellent book, btw. One of my favorite coming of age tales, before all the anti- masculinity, soft traits seeped in. It holds true to the traditional masculine themes- discipline, purpose, channeled aggression, personal honor, competition, ability to endure pain, positive sexuality, strength, dealing with disappointment, discovery of sexuality and female nature etc . It really has all the timeless themes- and Modine is absolutely superb. He just nails it - with that kind of old school earnestness we don’t really seem to value much anymore. A true heroes journey.

Or, your best friend's barely legal, half your age daughter throws her perky self at you.
Blame it on Rio.

Where do you live in the South that wrestling isn't a thing?
Considering the fact that there have historically been almost zero HS wrestling programs in LA north of Alexandria, is this really so hard to understand? Arkansas didn't even sanction HS wrestling until ~2008. Just because it was big in your neck of the woods growing up doesn't mean we all grew up with it.

I graduated from Central in 1985. We did not have a wrestling team.
But thanks to the Olympics and this movie I knew about wrestling. This is one of my “go to” motivational sports movies.
I own it on DVD even.

I graduated from Mandeville High in 1992. I think only St Paul's offered wrestling at that time. I am pretty sure St Pauls competed against other private schools.

Great movie, Great soundtrack.
And for all you folks who just didn't know wrestling existed, I get it. It's not football. However, in Louisiana it's been around in force since the 70's, and and to a lesser extent for decades before that. By the 70s lots of schools, particularly in South LA along the I-10 corridor had teams, and NO, BR, and Lafayette all had big tourneys back then. And as someone stated, LSU was nationally ranked and became a top 10 team under coach Larry Sciacchetano in the mid 70s-80s with two Top 8 finishes in the NCAA's. Unfortunately Title IX put the kibosh on many college wrestling programs, particularly in the South.
And as a State Champ back in the day, I can tell you that most decent wrestlers could do that peg board thing Matthew Modine did in the movie clip someone posted.
