I watched this last night for the first time. It's available on Max. Wow, such a fantastic movie. It really is timeless and the context remarkable. When they filmed/released that, we were in the heart of WWII and no one knew how, if or when the war was going to end. There had also not been enough time yet to fully appreciate the atrocities of the concentration camps.
The film is well written, well paced, and well performed. Today's studios could learn a thing or two about crafting stories by going back to examine the classics.
Edit: typos

The chick crying during the "La Marseillaise" was unscripted. She was an actual French actress who was living in Hollywood.

“Round up the usual suspects.”
The greatest movie ever made.

Great movie, I always wished there was some kind of follow up, preferably in a book so you can just hang out with those characters.
Here's a treatment written back then about a possible sequel called Brazzaville.
There's also a novel titled As Time Goes By which is a prequel/sequel that alternates between the early life of Rick and the time immediately following the ending of Casablanca.
My favorite quote from the film? Two classic lines from Rick spouted in seconds to put a dame in her place:
Yvonne: "Where were you last night?”
Rick: “That's so long ago, I don't remember.”
Her follow-up: “Will I see you tonight?”
Stud Rick: “I never make plans that far ahead.' "

The pacing on this movie is almost unparalleled. Also, it mixes styles effortlessly; comedy, drama, romance, war, and even music numbers. There's not many movies like it. Bogart, Bergman, Rains, Lorre, and Greenstreet also had amazing timbres to their voices and that adds something as well. Peak golden age Hollywood.

If Hollywood made a perfect film, that film was Casablanca.

Michael Curtiz was an absolute directorial gangster. For my money, he's the man who actually invented modern filmmaking and he did it in the 1930s and 40s.
Almost all of his best films have modern pacing. Casablanca obviously being the best of them, Buf The Adventures of Robin Hood is almost just as well paced. Captain Blood is also fantastic and so many more.
Curtiz was also an incredible at casting, but Casablanca is clearly his Magnus Opus. It also happens to be maybe the best written script in the history of the medium.
There are just so many aspects of Casablanca that are undeniably great. It's a perfect film. That's the highest praise I can give it.
