Collateral is much better film. Training Day is more fun.

That's a hell of good question. I love both but I have a soft spot for Collateral if for no other reason than the soundtrack. Shadow on the Sun by Audioslave while Max and Vincent are just sitting in the cab watching the wolves cross the street is a frickin awesome scene. Plus there's this

Both movies feature great villains but TC as Vincent is better to me.
Both take place in a single day.
Both villains are relentless and calculated.
Both get thwarted by the underdog.
Both do well to mix a black guy and a white guy and not have it all be about race which would be impossible to film these days.
Alonso is a good villain, but Vincent catching the jazz guys head before it hits the plate and "yo homie" are iconic. Collaterals the better action movie and maybe thats why I like it more.
Honestly this is the best comparison thread I've participated in on the board. Makes me wanna watch em both

I saw one of those "making of..." videos on Collateral and apparently Mann wrote this entire backstory of Vincent and how he became a sociopathic contract killer. It was like a book and included stuff like his second grade teacher ignoring other kids bullying him and all kinds of weird stuff. And Cruise had to learn all of it even though absolutely nothing about his character's past is in the actual movie. Mann apparently does this a lot and feels that it adds depth to the acting performance and character development.

Did Vincent tell the story of killing his father in the movie, or was that a scene that got cut?

Collateral was one of the movies where I was pulling for the bad guy.

He tells Max he killed his abusive father but then laughs and says he was just joking and he died of liver disease. There was no real story to it unless that’s something that got cut out.

Friedkin is so goated. I swear I've seen every video of his like that, he's a brilliant storyteller. He could've done stand-up comedy the way he sets up punchlines and sends them home a few minutes after.

Oh yeah I sometimes just put the compilation of his stories on in the background.
The Exorcist 2 one is elite as well

Michael Mann had the bright idea of taking a true psychopath in Tom Cruise and allowing him to be a psychopath on screen instead of forcing him to be a good guy is one of the most brilliant moves of his career.

Ok, now I want a prequel directed by Mann. Not sure who could pull off a young Vincent.

All of this.

Is there a wrong answer here? Both are great movies.

I like both equally, but only one gave me Naked Eva Mendes

Not even close: Training Day
Posted on 2/10/26 at 4:39 pm to boomjosh
Training Day gets docked some points for the ending. Love me some Denzel but the whole speech and “you shot me in the arse” but was way to cheesy for as good of a movie as it was up to that point.

The underdog protagonists are also both great.
Fox as a wimpy cab driver is gold. He plays it perfectly.
Hawke as the rookie trying to figure out wtf is going on, especially that shower scene in the barrio, superb.
