I am so glad I saw Wicked in New Orleans last December before the movie came out. I will probably wait for it to get released to streaming and watch at home.

Being a great play (and story) helps.

Don't know about the play, but the book was straight arse. Terrible. This IP had a lot of potential considering Frank Baum wrote 14 Oz books.

I did not enjoy the novel either. The story is very much a political commentary/allegory similar to George Orwell's Animal Farm, and it gets very heavy-handed at times. The play, while keeping the plot the same, is very different when it comes to its tone. It's a lot more fun, particularly in the first act. You don't need to have read the book to enjoy the stage show. It answers several questions that fans of the original Wizard of Oz film might have, such as why the Wicked Witch wants Dorothy's shoes so badly, where the scarecrow, tin man, and cowardly lion come from, etc.

We have an office in Sydney, was talking to some coworkers who saw it there and said it was the best movie they’ve seen at a theater in a very long time

I saw the play on Broadway, incredible production and performance.

That said, I didn't (and still don't) care for the story at all. I don't mind trying to tie motivations to villains beyond their just being evil, but the story itself tries to set the Wicked Witch as a good character who is the victim of the cruelty of a world which rejects her because of she looks different from everyone else (read: noble victim).

To me, the story is like a Trigglypuff biopic.

Not going to lie I would have gone seen it if Idina was the lead. Her pipes are awesome

Both Idina and Kristin have cameos in the movie. They get to sing a bit.

The Barbie movie made so much money last year by becoming an "event"

Large groups of girls and women all wearing pink wanted to go and take their selfies and stuff.

Wasn't even really about the movie so much as taking part of this fun cultural event, etc.

Smart from a business standpoint. Don't sell the movie, try to sell it as FOMO on some social media cultural phenomenon.

I read one review that called it 'overlong and tedious' but all of Kaiju's favorite YouTubers like it, so I think you're right. It will kill.

The early reviews are high af. How did they miss a halloween release tho?

The '39 musical has never really been associated w/Halloween so I don't see why this one would either.

For something like 30 years the '39 version would be aired just once a year as a major TV special around Easter on one of the OTA tv stations.

I just read a review that was favorable but said part two will have to have created new songs and add scenes since the first part is two hours and forty one minutes long, which is longer than the stage play of you remove the intermission. I'm not sure making this into two movies was a great idea and delaying the release of the second movie for a year may be too long.

Not a fan of this. The new songs will probably suck and not fit in with the original ones.

For the love of God, I hope they didn't get LIn Manuel Miranda to write the new lyrics.

I am curious how they will handle certain plot points that are only hinted at in the stage show, such as Dorothy's house falling on Nessarose, her teaming up with the scarecrow, tin man, and lion, or Elphaba's "death" scene, which is shown only in shadow in the play.

We saw the musical in New York, but my wife seems to have zero interest in the movie or showing it to my daughter. Merch seems to be freakin everywhere though.

My wife and I saw it at an early screening for Amazon Prime members on Monday night. If you enjoyed the stage show, you will love the movie. It is a near perfect adaptation of Act 1 of the play. They did not cut out a single song. The performances are great and the vocals, with the exception of Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum's "talk singing" are excellent. I was initially very concerned about the casting of Ariana Grande as Glinda. I just wasn't sure she had the acting chops or the vocals to handle the material. Boy, was I wrong. She may have been the best part of the movie. She looks amazing, sings beautifully, and her comedic timing is spot on. She and Cynthia Erivo have great chemistry and their friendship on screen is very believable. While there is some CGI, they also use practical sets a lot, and it really helps with the grand scale of the film. It's not a "CGI blob" as one other poster said it would be, at least not until the final sequence. If I had to criticize something, it would be that they drew out the "Defying Gravity" scene a little too long. They took a three and a half minute song and made it last almost 10 minutes. I can understand why they did it, since it's the climax of the movie. Other than that, I really enjoyed it.

Same. I have read the book (what a chore) and seen the play (but only once) and I mainly went because my daughter is a huge fan. I was pleasantly surprised by Ariana's Glinda. She stole the show. I thought the dancing /becoming friends night out scene was too long, similar to how you felt about Defying Gravity, but I do realize they made a 1.5 hour stage show into a 2:45 movie...

I enjoyed it enough to go to part two when it's released.
