Green Day is shitty frat punk

I bought it right when it came out. I remember they had a huge add for it in High Times. I spent an unreal amount of time just sitting there stoned looking at all the details in the cover.
And yes, it's my favorite Green Day album by far. Every song is legit.

Another day, another shitty take from Midget Death Squad.

This, Dookie is great, but AI is an iconic rock opera. Put Green Day into the upper echelon of artists for the 2000s

This was before he was using a fake British accent, right?

It was released on February 1, 1994 - September 1993 was when they first started recording it

To this day, I still can't stand American Idiot. I found it lame when it came out. It didn't feel authentic and felt like something you see a lot of artists do in jumping on the bandwagon to be the "cool" protest act. Because of that, the album suffers and feels incredibly dated. Dookie on the other hand feels timeless to me.
I will say though...I saw them at Voodoo fest in 2004 right after American Idiot came out, and they put on a great show. That was a fun night...Pixies, then Green Day, then Beastie Boys - all on the same stage, back to back to back. One of the best music experiences of my life.

Hardly the first time a band has protested a war plus it’s not like 2004 was time where protesting the war was super popular. The Dixie Chicks ruined their career not long before that by protesting Bush. And aside from Holiday and American Idiot, the rest of the album wasn’t political

Those are probably my two least favorite songs on the album, more because they've been overplayed than anything - I do really like the album, a lot - but the rest of it is pretty political in some form (Wake Me Up When September Ends is apparently the only song not part of the story of the album, and they have 2 or 3 bsides that didn't make final cut that are very political)
I hope they finally play Dookie in full next year in the US for the proper 30th (they've only played it in full front to back in the UK & Spain)

I wasn't implying that it was. I'm fine with protest / political music, when it is done well and feels authentic. To me, it didn't feel that way with American Idiot.

Well, that probably has more to do with their audience than anything. Green Day's audience was world's different than Dixie Chicks at the time and a protest / political album would of course play well with Green Day fans.

I'll always be partial to Kerplunk, but the first time I got to see them live was on this tour at Tips...
I actually dont mind AI, but c'mon with that best record nonsense..
Warning is their low key next best record...

True but it was hardly the cash cow at the time, most music at the time was pro war country songs. Eminem’s anti Bush song Mosh didn’t come out until later that year, and no anti war songs even charted until American Idiot dropped
Funny thing is, American Idiot wasn’t even supposed to happen, they were going to release an album in 2003 but the master tapes were stolen. Instead they shifted to the pop punk rock opera with infamous non political songs like Jesus of Suburbia and Wake Me Up When September Ends

quote:Completely agree. I was both a fan of Green Day's earlier work and opposed to the war and thought it was a crap album, so much so that I haven't paid attention to anything they've put out ever since, unless you count that one "The Saints are Coming" cover.

Dookie, on the other hand, is a solid classic -- I still put that album on occasionally.
I was also at that Voodoo in 2004. Great show.

quote:Exactly -- for example, Fat Mike's Fat Wreck Chords put out a couple compilation albums called Rock Against Bush full of anti-war songs recorded by well-known punk bands. Green Day was on there with a cover of Fortunate Son. It wasn't like it was unusual for them.

Green Day doesn’t deserve the hate.
They’re just fun pop punk. Nothing wrong with that
