He's kind of country-folk but my favorite is John Prine
and Waylon Jennings recorded a lot of Billy Joe Shaver songs

None worth mentioning

Some great names in this thread so far. I'll add a little more input when I can actually get to a computer in a while.

Willie is a solid #3 for me. Coe, Haggard, Waylon, and Tom T Hall are all great in their own right and worthy of being in the discussion. Jamey Johnson is, imo, the best current songwriter. Hard to believe he also wrote that honky tonk badonkadonk song.
Also interesting that a couple of people have thrown Church's name out there. He's a guy that gets overlooked because of some of the crappy "I'm from a small town, look how redneck I am" songs he has out there, but he's written some pretty good stuff. Lightning is Church at his best.

No doubt about it. The song that got him his record deal. I love the whole Sinners Like Me album. Best of his three so far IMO.
"Over When It's Over" on Chief is also top notch.

I have to give it to Church, he does a good job of changing it up and keeping his music fresh. Just a good all around musician, and put on a hell of a show at Rodeo this year. These Boots is a personal favorite as well from Sinners Like Me.
A couple of other guys I'm partial to personally that haven't been mentioned are Dwight Yoakam, and Jerry Jeff Walker.

James McMurtry is one of my favorite shows. Dude is AWESOME.
He plays every Wednesday at the Continental Club

I'd agree with John Prine being ranked highly too (I didnt really see him as country, though)

Have we forgotten Rodney Crowell?

James McMurtry is great. I also like Hayes Carll, he's witty in a way like John Prine.

Hank Sr. has to be far and away the best in my book.
Follow that up with Willie, Cash, Kris, and Haggard.
Of the more current (last 20 years or so) songwriters I would go with Jamie Johnson, Dean Dillon, Sanger D. Schaeffer, maybe even Tony Arata.
What gets me are the songwriters like Bill Anderson who have been turning out hits for decades. Sometimes you just have a talent to write songs that will touch just about anyone, regardless of generation.

Hayes voice is starting to get on my nerves...his last album was hard to listen to. He greatly exaggerated his already half assed awful sound that made him unique in the first place for KMAG YOYO

Wrote Levelland (recorded by himself as well as REK).
Another great McMurtry song: Hurricane Party
ETA: Dad is Larry (Lonesome Dove), so he has the writing pedigree.

I gotta agree with Townes...if not the best, he's definitely up there. The Dirty River Boys are covering "Lungs" on the album they're releasing and it's killer.
I may get shite for this, but I think Evan Felker from Turnpike Troubadours is a very gifted songwriter.
"Long Hot Summer Day" aside, of course...and he didn't even write that song. (I'll probably get shite for that, too, but LHSD is one of my least favorite Turnpike songs.)
