Thats a good one. I was playing that on my guitar a while back. Its interesting because each verse changes to a lower key ( starts in D then moves to E and the F) which builds the tension on the song.

"The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" spooked me as a kid. Pretty sinister and sneaky.

This has become one of my favorite songs over the years, guy Clark- let him roll

PW-The First Mrs. Jones
Kurt south - shotgun
cory branan - whiskey grove
Chris knight- framed
the band - it makes no difference

Those are some I didn't see mentioned. Sad songs make me ridiculously happy.

Love David. All time great imo.

quote:

And I found his truck in the floodplain upside down It was a hell of a rain I don't know if he'd drowned Or if he died on impact, it must have rolled three times Yeah, the only thing to make matters worse Is that his mama's a late night ER nurse And he was DOA, she just about lost her mind

Another good one is Justin Townes Earle - Yuma

quote:

So he was just 23 when he stepped out on that ledge
It was his weary heart that pushed him to the edge
He was tired of living life, looking for love
"A weary heart just needs a little touch And is it too much to ask?", he cried as he stepped into the wind
He turned his back on the world and he fell back to Earth again
So with the wind in his hair and smile on his face
He crashed through the hood of an Olds '98 And he lay there dying on a cold winter's day all alone All alone

I remember the original version by Vicki Lawrence and never understood why Little Sister let Big Brother hang for a crime she committed.

Reba killing her cheating sister in law and the guy she was cheating with, and then letting her brother get hung for it has to be up there.

Wild Irish Rose by George Jones

Frankly, any number of Mr. Jones' tunes could be at the top of this list. Just sayin'
