Since I can't embed more than one link, here's a tune from the latest album:

If Vampire Weekend is the benchmark here, then most of what I listen to isn't "popular."

Some bands and artists that are "lesser known" that have put out stuff recently that I like:

Good Looks
Kevin Morby
Friendship
The Beths
Wild Pink
Florry
Wednesday (they're blowing up due to recently released album)
Big Thief (sort of silly to put them on a non-popular list, but anyway)
Ratboys (also blowing up due to new album)
PUP

Some older Indie Bands that were VW contemporaries that I love:

Wolf Parade (probably one of my favorites of all time)
Bishop Allen
Coconut Records
Beirut
Noah and the Whale
Sleigh Bells
Chairlift
Cults
Broken Social Scene
Cold War Kids
Fruit Bats
FIDLAR

King Kong
That late 80s/early 90s Louisville scene was pretty fertile with many good bands, that are mostly unknown to most..

Buckler's other band, Slint, is definitely more well known than King Kong... but still relatively obscure...

The Squirrel Bait "family tree" is impressive alone... this image below is old and doesn't even account for the Breeders/Lemonheads/Gang of Four, etc...

Rodan, Crain, June of 44 are other really good bands that came out Louisville at that time, too..

Same... it was probably more so the case in the 80s and early 90s.. the internet has somewhat changed that.. Now days everything is so much more available to people if they want to look for it.. Back then you had to go digging in record bins, catch live shows, meet people with similar taste, have access to a good college radio station, etc...

Still very few bands I like are household names...

Built to Spill. They should be way more popular.

Has the average person heard of Vampire Weekend? I’m gonna a say no. Sure they have had 3 top albums, but they certainly aren’t a household name outside of music snobs. That’s what I was suggesting. Has the average person never heard or vaguely heard of your favorite band?

I don’t think you are right about this. I think most people between 21-50 have heard of Vampire Weekend. They play arenas…you kind of have to be popular to fill places that big.

Lots:

Failure
Drab Majesty
Beastmaker
Slowdive
Servotron
Man... or Astroman?
The Sword
Carpenter Brut
Gunship
Perturbator
Traitrs
Weedeater

That's just off the top of my head.

Certainly Metallica is more known than Vampire Weekend, but that’s a much different statement than saying Vampire Weekend never had mainstream success. They have had a hugely successful career very much in the mainstream. Millions of monthly listeners to this day, They are still a sell out venue type act in middle to large sized venues and high up on festival lineups and it’s been 20 years since their self titled album that put them on the map

Anyways, To answer your question I have a lot of these because my pet hobby is finding smaller or rising bands and see them in smaller venues before they get big. Once they hit larger venues and mainstream success I usually don’t see them live often, the intimate concert experience is just way more fun for me.

Winyah - seeing them next month live.

The Wrens
Grifters

I could make a really long list, but those are my top two that immediately come to mind.

SAULT

No music videos, no interviews (outside of a few members’ solo work), only played two shows so far.

Vampire Weekend are indy and critic darlings whose first record sold over a million copies in the US alone. Great band though.

My list would be:

Ron Gallo
Kurt Vile
John Martyn
Bill Callahan/Smog
S.G. Goodman
Ty Segall
Solid Space (only one great album that was only in cassette form for a long time)
Anders Osborne
Soul Coughing (does this count? they were kind of popular in the '90s)
Grant Lee Buffalo

I like your list. I’d also add The Shins to it. Maybe Silversun Pickups too. I think Shins had a real unique sound. I feel like “indie bands” by definition aren’t mainstream.

I put arena mainstream bands in the Foo Fighters/Metallica/DMB/Smashing Pumpkins where most people have heard of them.

I discovered the Mountain Goats a couple years ago and while not surprised they aren’t super popular, they do have a few songs that are wildly underrated IMO.

Vampire Weekend is huge. They had 3 consecutive #1 albums and billions of streams.

This thread doesn't even fulfill its own premise lol

Guess there is a scale on what is “popular”. Vmapire Weekend’s top song on Spotify has over 500m listens. Looks like most recent tour had them playing theaters or amphitheaters. Not playing stadiums or arenas (frankly not too many bands play those size places anymore, especially not 25 year old legacy band) but not playing clubs either

They've played on SNL 4 times. That is firmly in the cultural zeitgeist.

Do you know any of the hardcore bands from that scene? There was one called Endpoint that I used to love:

They had a couple of decent-sized hits, but Finger Eleven never got nearly as huge as they should have.

Yet never had a hit single that charted on Billboard Hot 100.
