…how do you release “It Still Moves” and think there’s even a slight chance you ever make another album that good?

The songs I like from them, I like a lot. There really isn't an in between for me.

I really loved Tennessee Fire through It Still Moves... My interest faded with Z and I never really listened to anything after that... Hard to believe that was 20 years ago...
I think I may have to revisit Z and everything post that...

I feel like It Still Moves is probably their best collection of songs. As far as their most beautiful and cohesive record, I still lean towards At Dawn.

Tennessee Fire
They recently released a live show called "MMJ Live Vol. 4:Terminal 5" which is a show from 2011 when they played Tennessee Fire in its entirety. There's also a couple pretty cool cover songs at the end, to include "Rocket Man" and "Tyrone".

It's my favorite... and was just such an amazing first listen with all that reverb... it just drew me in..
Then I saw them in a small club during that tour, and it was like a different band... With the flying Vs and just rocking... still great in a different way!

Csb etc, but one of my fav memories in my life is driving back from kayaking in NC and playing this album with my 15yr old daughter in the truck. It was absolutely sublime. Neither of us wanted to talk and interrupt the music

okonokos is pretty much the live Z album.
First song I ever heard from MMJ was One Big Holiday.
Well, now it is decided, I am going to go back and listen to all of these. it's been awhile.

Saw MMJ twice in the last couple years and they rock it out every time.
Circuital is their best album, It Still Moves is great, Evil Urges, Z are both excellent and I really like The Waterfall and Waterfall 2.
Their last self titled album is not their best and the latest song released from their up coming new album is not good, IMO.

I'm surprised you like the Waterfall records but not anything since. To my ears, the first Waterfall, and everything after, they just completely abandoned their old style/sound and now give off much more of an adult contemporary kinda vibe, which I personally can't stand. Still some good tracks here and there but....meh.
And yes, that new track is AWFUL. Their current arc reminds me of Wilco, a bit...just decided to quit making good music for some reason.
That said, I've seen MMJ the last few years, too, and they've definitely still "got it", even putting a bit of a 'jammy' spin on some of the newer stuff.

My vote goes to Z and never a bad time to repost Tyrone my fav live song of theirs:

When they released that Live album with Tennessee Fire, our family was on a pretty long road trip. That sparked me to have a major MMJ kick for the remainder of the trip.
By the end of the trip, my wife and kids had had enough.

It doesn't happen to every band, but for the most part, the studio stuff tends to go downhill after a certain age.
Both bands are still pretty fantastic live though.
My favorite MMJ shows were probably the Under the Sea prom shows at the 40 Watt in Athens. Looking back, I really should have worn earplugs. It was incredibly loud.

Wilco, MMJ, the Avett Bros... all of their albums got shitty after a certain point, but they're all still great live.

Guy Clark would have called this moment, “stuff that works.”
ETA: caught MMJ at Nolaween at the Orpheum in 2023 and it was BADASS.

The opened the Nola show with Jim’s solo work “State of the Art” and blew the roof off the joint.
