We Die Young and Bleed the Freak aren't heavy?

Mad Season showed that Lane could make it without the band
Lane is an all timer, but he did have McCready and Barrett in Mad Season, not like it was a solo project.

Compared to radio rock at the time, sure. Plenty of bands have a some harder songs in their catalog, that doesn't make them metal. If we're sticking to the 90s, look at Helmet and The Rollins Band for example. Both were much heavier than AIC but no one would call them metal.

I definitely thought they were more metal than punk (ironic for Rollins)...

Jerry's solo album was basically a supergroup album, like Mad Season.

The 3 post Layne albums for AIC are all great if you want to compare Jerry albums minus Layne.

I remember wearing NeverMind out in HS.. blew my mind…. After Kurt died I listened to PJ more and enjoyed them, saw them a lot in concert.. never thought AIC was better than them… JMO. There is a Nirvana cover band that comes around and they are about the best cover of a band you can get.. called Nirvani.. going to be in gville in a few weeks may go and take the kids…
Don’t get me wrong, I liked all those bands.. nir, pj SG and AIC along with screaming trees

If Lane Staley would not have died they would’ve been way bigger than Nirvana or Pearl Jam
Just to note. Layne died in '02, well after they called it quits.
Now you can say if Layne hadn't fallen to extreme addiction they'd have been bigger. But his death was well after their heyday.

Yes AIC was the best of their era

Layne died in 2002 after grunge was over. His death had no impact on whether or not they were the best grunge band.
Cobain’s death did.
Cobain’s death did.

Not saying they're Grunge albums but I'd say after Vs.
Vs stands up against Purple and Dirt as flawless Sophomore releases.

can't we reasonably assume that the reason Nirvana is even as big as they are is becuase kurt died?

You can't be serious? They were largely responsible for changing the face of "popular" music seemingly overnight... Their legacy would have only grown and not be limited to such a small sample size if Kurt hadn't died...
edit: those other bands rode on their back to the mainstream, plus they allowed bands (like STP) to get signed as every major label was chasing the next Nirvana..
If anything (IMO), his death is responsible for this even being a question... I'd have loved to hear the direction of his music and how it would have evolved over the years...

No band makes me switch faster. Absolutely hate their sound.

I dont really like them either, but I get that a lot of people love them.. not discounting them at all, its simply a matter of taste...

true, which is why they were wildly popular at the time. Do you deny that having the lead singer die young has possibly led to them having an elevated stature over time? If they had stayed Nirvana into their 50s would they still be seen as such? What if their subsequent albums sucked? What if they sold out? There's tons of scenarios out there where their popularity waned, we see it time adn time again.

I absolutely deny that... If anything, I think its lost on people just how talented Cobain (Nirvana) was and his suicide tends to dominate the narrative...
I doubt they would still be a band today and no doubt their popularity would have waned with the ever-changing popular music landscape... but I dont doubt his talent would have shown through regardless..
